dog days的意思是三伏天，关于这个表达的来源有两种说法。
第一种源于16世纪罗马天文学家的发现。每年天气最炎热这几个星期，天狼星(Sirius)总与太阳共升共落，而天狼星的别号就是the Dog Star。所以在拉丁文中人们用代表狗的词根“can”来表示天狼星“canicular”。所以这段酷热期就被称为dies caniculars(天狼星的日子)，英语写成了canicular days，民间用了更通俗的说法，就是dog days。(这个来源更为靠谱一点)
还有一种说法更好理解一些。天热的时候，狗会伸长舌头喘气，所以这种能把狗都热喘气的天气，就叫做dog days。
