Winter Solstice is the day with the shortest daytime and the longest nighttime, marking the beginning of the coldest time of a year. From this moment on, the temperature drops continuously, and people graally rece their outdoor ac-tivities. Farmers have less work in their field, mainly engag-ing themselves in the maintenance of the irrigation system and the prevention of freezing harm to crops to prepare for the spring sowing in the coming year.
Chinese have always been attaching so much importance to Winter Solstice that it is regarded as a festival in many places, when people celebrate it in different ways. The people in the north have the custom of eating jiaozi and those in the south the tradition of eating tangyuan.

A subject which seems to have been insufficiently studied by doctors and psychologists is the influence ofgeography and climate on the psychological and physical health of mankind. There seems no doubt that the general character of the landscape, the relative length of day and night, and the climate must all play a big part in determining what kind of people we are.
It is true that a few studies have been made. Where all the inhabitants of a particular area enjoy exceptionally good or bad health, scientists have identified .contributory factors such as the presence or absence of substances like iodine, fluoride, calcium, or iron in the water supply, or perhaps types of land thatprovide breeding places for pests like mosquitoes or rats.
Moreover, we can all generalize about types of people we have met. Those living in countries .with long dark winters are apt to be less talkative and less vivacious than inhabitants of countries where the climateis more equable(稳定的). And where the olive and the orange grow, there the inhabitants are cheerful, talkative, and spontaneous.
But these commonplace generalizations are inadequate: the influence: of climate and geography should be studied in depth. Do all mountain dwellers live to a ripe old age? Does the drinking of wine, rather than beer, result in a sunny and open temperament? Is the strength and height of one of the Kenyan tribes e to their habitual drinking of the blood of cows?
We are not yet sure of the answers to such .questions, but let us hope that something of benefit to mankind may eventually result from such studies.

B.Such generalizations are not inclusive enough to draw a convincing conclusion.
C.Such generalizations prove that nature plays an important role in determining social habits.
D.Such generalizations show that there are mainly two different types of people on the planet.

1、A course that has impressed you most in college.
2、A classmate of yours who has influenced you most in college.(大学中对你影响最深的一位同学)
3、A campus activity that has benefited most.(使你受益最深的一项校园活动)
Directions: From this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a short essay about a camp activity that has benefited you most. You should state the reasons and write at least 120 words but more than 180 words。
As a college student, it is full of meaning to participate in various camps which are beneficial for us. Among the camps I involved before, the English Summer camp held by our university with a small group of Chinese college students as well as some friends from English Spoken countries made me the most impressive。
There are two factors for my belief. For one thing, I expanded my scope of knowledge for the lecture made by a professor of the Harvard University. Though I have been learning English for almost ten years, getting knowledge from foreign teachers can still be something inspiring. I really want to know about current English countries’ culture, such as ecation, economy, politics and so on. In this way I could know more about the world and it would help me make right decisions when I graate from university whether going abroad for further study or not. And it would also help me understand more about our own country. The second reason for me is that the activities also changed me a lot, including English corner, English drama play, interesting knowledge competition and the like. Undisputedly, all these activities can not only help us learn more skills but improve our English。
In conclusion, it was my great pleasure to take part in this activity. I do believe that other kinds of outdoor activities would bring us a lot of advantages, so I would make effort to participate in such activities in the remaining years of my college study。

The Most Impressive Course in My College
When it comes to a course that leaves the deepest impression in university, different people stand on different grounds. As for me, the most impressive course in college is “Appreciation of English Movies”, which I like best. I prefer this curriculum to others owing to the following factors。
On one hand, the professor in charge of this course has impressed me most because she is not only knowledgeable but also patient. More importantly, it is this respectable teacher who spurs my interest to English harder and broadens my horizon as well. Until now, what she said in the class often occurs to my mind. On the other hand, there are many discussions in the classroom when we have lessons. We are allowed to talk freely about a movie, the topic ranging from the theme of a film to its casting. So, ring the talk, we become increasingly open-minded. And undoubtedly a brain open to everything carries great importance to study, work and life。
Generally speaking, the course on appreciating English films has impressed me most for it is not only instructive but also entertaining. And therefore, I suggest that more similar courses should be offered in the university。
