Pineapple

The pineapple (Ananas comosus) is a tropical [ground] and fruit (berry), native to Brazil, Bolivia, Peru, and Paraguay. The tree is a bromeliad (family Bromeliaceae), a short, herbaceous perennial with 30 or more trough-shaped and pointed leaves 30–100 cm long, surrounding a thick stem. Of the fruits of the year I give my vote to the orange. In the first place it is a perennial--if not in actual fact, at least in the greengrocer’s shop.
