1. 什麼是激光

激光
1960年一種神奇的光誕生了，它就是激光。激光的英文名稱是 Laser，它是英語短語「受激發射光放大」中每個實詞第一個字母組成的縮略詞，它包含了激光產生的由來。它一出現就創造了許多奇跡，真可謂「一鳴驚人」。

激光的方向性極好，在傳播中始終像一條筆直的線，不易發散，光強也可以保證。一束激光射出20千米遠，光斑只有杯口那麼大，就是發射到38萬千米外的月球上，光圈的直徑也不過 2千米，在地球上看去，只是一個明亮的紅點。利用激光的這一特性，科學家在1962年測出了地球與月球的精確距離。

激光具有穿透透明物質的能力，用它治療眼睛效果特佳。我們知道，眼睛有個透明的外罩，即角膜，還有個血管交織的視網膜，當視網膜出了問題需要修補時，視網膜在眼球的後邊，所以手術很難進行。這時如果請激光來幫忙，一切問題就會迎刃而解。

1963年，一位名叫弗林克的醫生利用激光成功地做了視網膜手術，整個手術時間才幾千分之一秒，病人甚至不需要麻醉，也不會感到痛苦。

激光的相乾性很好，用透鏡能把它聚集成極細的光束，在這束光的作用下，任何材料都會被燒熔、氣化。總光能還不及一隻15 瓦燈泡點亮一秒鍾發出的光能的激光束，就能將1.5米遠處的一塊厚約2厘米的鋼板打出一個孔。

激光的最初中文名叫做「鐳射」、「萊塞」，是它的英文名稱LASER的音譯，是取自英文Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation的各單詞的頭一個字母組成的縮寫詞。意思是「受激輻射的光放大」。

什麼叫做「受激輻射」？它基於偉大的科學家愛因斯坦在1916年提出了的一套全新的理論。這一理論是說在組成物質的原子中，有不同數量的粒子（電子）分布在不同的能級上，在高能級上的粒子受到某種光子的激發，會從高能級跳到（躍遷）到低能級上，這時將會輻射出與激發它的光相同性質的光，而且在某種狀態下，能出現一個弱光激發出一個強光的現象。這就叫做「受激輻射的光放大」，簡稱激光。

激光主要有四大特性：激光高亮度、高方向性、高單色性和高相乾性

激光的高亮度：固體激光器的亮度更可高達1011W／cm2Sr。不僅如此，具有高亮度的激光束經透鏡聚焦後，能在焦點附近產生數千度乃至上萬度的高溫，這就使其可能可加工幾乎所有的材料。

激光的高方向性：激光的高方向性使其能在有效地傳遞較長的距離的同時，還能保證聚焦得到極高的功率密度，這兩點都是激光加工的重要條件

激光的高單色性：由於激光的單色性極高，從而保證了光束能精確地聚焦到焦點上，得到很高的功率密度。

激光的高相乾性：相乾性主要描述光波各個部分的相位關系。正是激光具有如上所述的奇異特性因此在工業加工中得到了廣泛地應用。

目前激光已廣泛應用到激光焊接、激光切割、激光打孔（包括斜孔、異孔、膏葯打孔、水松紙打孔、鋼板打孔、包裝印刷打孔等）、激光淬火、激光熱處理、激光打標、玻璃內雕、激光微調、激光光刻、激光制膜、激光薄膜加工、激光封裝、激光修復電路、激光布線技術、激光清洗等。

經過30多年的發展，激光現在幾乎是無處不在，它已經被用在生活、科研的方方面面：激光針灸、激光裁剪、激光切割、激光焊接、激光淬火、激光唱片、激光測距儀、激光陀螺儀、激光鉛直儀、激光手術刀、激光炸彈、激光雷達、激光槍、激光炮……，在不久的將來，激光肯定會有更廣泛的應用。
