歐拉(Euler,1707~1783),瑞士數學家及自然科學家。1707年4月15日出生於瑞士的巴塞爾,1783年9月18日於俄國的彼得堡去逝。歐拉出生於一個牧師家庭,自幼受到父親的教育。13歲時入讀巴塞爾大學,15歲大學畢業,16歲獲得碩士學位。
歐拉的父親希望他學習神學,但他最感興趣的是數學。在上大學時,他已受到約翰第一·伯努利的特別指導,專心研究數學。18歲時,他徹底的放棄了當牧師的想法而專攻數學,並開始發表文章。
1727年,在丹尼爾·伯努利的推薦下,歐拉到俄國的彼得堡科學院從事研究工作,並在1731年接替丹尼爾第一·伯努利,成為物理學教授。
在俄國的14年中,他努力不懈地投入研究工作,在分析學、數論及力學方面均有出色的表現。此外,歐拉還應俄國政府的要求,解決了不少如地圖學、造船業等的實際問題。
1735年,他因工作過度以致右眼失明。在1741年,他受到普魯士腓特烈大帝的邀請到德國科學院擔任物理數學所所長一職,長達25年。他在柏林期間的研究內容更加廣泛,涉及行星運動、剛體運動、熱力學、彈道學、人口學等等,這些工作與他的數學研究互相推動著。與此同時,他在微分方程、曲面微分幾何及其他數學領域均有開創性的發現。

在微分幾何方面,歐拉引入了空間曲線的參數方程,給出了空間曲線曲率半徑的解析表達方式。在1766年,他出版了《關於曲面上曲線的研究》,這是歐拉對微分幾何最重要的貢獻,更是微分幾何發展史上一個里程碑。他將曲面表為z=f(x,y),並引入一系列標准符號以表示z對x,y的偏導數,這些符號至今仍通用。此外,在該著作中,他亦得到了曲面在任意截面上截線的曲率公式。
