Like fine food, good writing is something we approach with pleasure and enjoy from the first taste to the last. And good writers, like good cooks, do not suddenly appear full-blown. Quite the opposite, just as the cook has to undergo a particular training, mastering the skills of his trade, the writer must sit at hisdesk and devote long hours to achieving a style in his writing, whatever its purpose is—schoolwork, matters of business, or purely social communication.

You may be sure that the more painstaking the effort, the more effective the writing, and the more rewarding.

There are still some faraway places in the world where you might find a public scribe to do your business or social writing for you, for money. There are a few managers who are lucky enough to have the service ofthat rare kind of secretary who can take care of all sorts of letter writing with no more than a quick note to work from. But for most of us, if there is any writing to be done, we have to do it ourselves.

We have to write school papers, business papers or home papers. We are constantly called on to put words to papers. It would be difficult to count the number of such words, messages, letters, and reports put intomails or delivered by hand, but the daily figures must be extremely large. What is more, everyone who writes expects, or at least hopes whatever he writes will be read, from first word to last, not just thrown into some 「letters-to-be-read」 files or into a wastepaper basket. This is the reason we bend our efforts toward learning and practicing the skills of interesting, effective writing.

Choose correct answers to the question:

1. In this passage, good writing is compared to fine food in that _______.

A. both writers and cooks have to work a long time every day

B. both are essential to life

C. both are writers and cooks can earn a good living

D. both are enjoyable

2. A public "scribe" (Para 2, Line 1) is _____.

A.a secretary who does your business or social writing

B. a machine that does writing for you

C. a public school where writing is taught

D. a person who ears a living by writing for others

3. According to the passage, some managers don't have to do any letter writing because _____.

A. they rely on quick notes C. they have a computer to do it

B. they have excellent secretaries D. they prefer making phone calls

4. According to the author, if your letter is thrown into some "letter-to-be-read" file, ______.

A. it will receive immediate attention

B. it will be dealt with by the secretary

C. it is likely to be neglected

D. it is meant to be delivered soon

5. The purpose of the author in writing this passage is _____.

A. to explain and persuade

B. to comment and criticize

C. to interest and entertain

D. to argue and demonstrate

It is not often realized that women held a high place in southern European societies in the 10th and 11th centuries. As a wife, the woman was protected by the setting up of a dowry (彩禮). Admittedly, the purposeof this was to protect her against the risk of desertion, but in reality its function in the social and family life of the time was much more important. The dowry was the wife』s right to receive a tenth of all her husband』擾卜s property. The wife had the right to with hold consent, in all transactions the husband wouldmake, and more than just a right; the documents show that she enjoyed a real power of decision, equal to that of her husband. In no case do the documents indicate any degree of difference in the legal status of husband and wife.

The wife shared in the management of her husband』s personal property, but the opposite was not always true. Women seemed perfectly prepared to defend their own inheritance against husbands who tried to exceed their rights, and on occasion they showed a fine fighting spirit. A case in point is that of Maria Vivas. Having agreed with her husband Miro to sell a field she had inherited, for the needs of the household, she insisted on compensation. None being offered, she succeeded in dragging her husband to the scribe(法學家) to have a contract ly drawn up assigning her a piece of land from Miro』s personal inheritance. The unfortunate husband was obliged to agree, as the contract says, 「for the sake of peace.」 Either through the dowry or through being hot-tempered, the wife knew how to win herself, with the context of the family, a powerful economic position.ric illnesses including depression often do not manifest themselves until the late teens or early 20s.

Choose correct answers to the question:

1. A decimum was ________.

A. the wife's inheritance from her father

B. a gift of money to the new husband

C.a protection of the wife』s right

D. a written contract

2. In the 10th and11th centuries in southern European, women』s social position was ______.

A. higher than men』s

B. as high as men』s

C. lower than men』s

D.never recognized

3.The purpose of mentioning the case of Maria Vivas_____

A.to show women had the same rights as,if not more than, their husband

B.to prove hot-tempered woman held a powerful economic position

C.to tell the readers the real situations in some countries

D.to show the fight spirits of woman

4.Could a husband sell his wife's inheritance?

A. Yes, if she agreed.

B. No, under no circumstances.

C. Yes, whenever he wished to.

D, Yes, if his father-in-law agreed.

5. Which of the following is NOT mentioned as an effect of the dowry system?

A. The husband had to share the power of decision in marriage.

B. The wife could manage her husband』s personal property.

C. The wife gained a powerful economic position.

D. The wife would not be deserted by her husband.

第4句以 「The decimum was...」

Having agreed with her husband可推斷售賣妻子繼承的財產必須先徵得妻子的同意,因此選項A正確。

There is a popular belief among parents that schools are no longer interested in spelling .No school I have taught in has ever _____ spelling or considered it unimportant as a basic skill. There are, however , vastly different ideas about how to teach it , or how much _____ it must be given over general language development and writing ability. The problem is , how to encourage a child to express himself freely and _____ in writing with out holding him back with the complexities of spelling? If spelling become the only focal point of his teacher』s interest, clearly a __4__ child will be likely to 「play safe」. He will tend to write only words within his spelling range, choosing to avoid __5__ language. That』s why teachers often __6__ the early use of dictionaries and pay attention to content rather than technical ability. I was once shocked to read on the bottom of a sensitive piece of writing about a personal experience :「 This work is __7__ !There are far too many spelling errors and your writing is illegible( 難以辨認的 ).」 It may have been a sharp __8__ of the pupil』s technical abilities in writing, but it was also a sad reflection on the teacher who had omitted to read the essay, which __9__ some beautiful expressions of the child』s deep feelings.

The teacher was not wrong to draw attention to the errors, but if his priorities had centred on the child』s ideas, an expression of his disappointment with the presentation would have given the pupil more __10__ to seek improvement.

A)priority B)criticism C)contained D)clearly

E)adventurous F ) discourage G)motivation H)terrible

I)ignored J)difficult K)encourage L)expressed

M)confidently N)bright O)motive L)expressed

由後半句中 a sad reflection on the teacher 可知,前半句是在指責學生,故選項中只有criticism符合題意。

In bringing up children, every parent watches eagerly the child』s acquisition (學會) of each new skill- the first spoken words, the first independent steps, or the beginning of reading and writing. It is often tempting to hurry the child beyond his natural learning rate, but this can set up dangerous feelings of failure and states of worry in the child might be encouraged to learn to read before he knows the meaning of the words he reads. On the other hand, though, if a child is left alone too much, or without any learning opportunities, he loses his natural enthusiasm for life and his desire to find out new things for himself.

Parents vary greatly in their degree of strictness towards their children. Some may be especially strict in money matters. Others are sever over times of coming home at night or punctuality for meals. In general, the controls imposed represent the needs of the parents and the values of the community as much as the child』s own happiness.

知緩As regard the development of moral standards in the growing child, consistency is very important in parental teaching. To forbid a thing one day and excuse it the next is no foundation for morality(道德). Also, parents should realize that 「 example is better than precept 」. If they are not sincere and do not practice what they preach(說教), their children may grow confused and emotionally insecure when they grow old enough to think for themselves, and realize they have been to some extent fooled.

5.In moral matters, parents should ________

A. observe the rules themselves

B. be aware of the marked difference between alts and children

C. forbid things which have no foundation in morality

D.consistently ensure the security of their children

Learning how to write is like taking a course in public speaking. I'd ask whether anyone in class had evertaken such a course. Always a few hands would go up.

"What did you learn in that course?" I'd ask.

"Well, the main thing was learning how to face an audience: not to be inhibited (拘謹)... not to be nervous. "

Exactly, when you take a course in public speaking nowadays, you don't hear much about grammar and vocabulary. Instead. you're taught how not to be afraid or embarrassed, how to speak without a prepared script. how to read out to the live audience before you. Public speaking is a matter of overcoming your long-standing nervous inhibitions.

The same is true of writing. The point of the whole thing is to overcome your nervous inhibitions, to break through the invisible barrier that separates you from the person who』ll read what you wrote. You must learn to sit in front of your typewriter of dictating machine and read out to the person at the other end of the line.

Of course, in public speaking with the audience right in front of you, the problem is easier. You can lookat them and talk to them directly. In writing, you 're alone. It needs an effort of your experience or imagination to take hold of that other person and talk to him or her. But that effort is necessary or at least it' s necessary until you've reached the point when you quite naturally and unconsciously "talk on paper".

Choose correct answers to the question:

1.The main task of a public speech course is to __________.

A.teach grammar and vocabulary

B. teach how to write a script

C. teach how to overcome nervousness

D. teach live spoken-language expressions

2.Learning how to write is similar to learning how to speak in public in that writer should _____.

A.overcome his or her nervousness in the first place

B. take hold of a reader and talk to him or her before writing

C. learn to use a typewriter or dictating machine

D. talk to himself on paper

3.what does the author compare writing and public speaking?

A.Writhing needs more experience and imagination than public speaking

B.Both writing and public speaking require great effort

C.Writhing is just as imagination as public speaking

D.Writhing is not as natural as public speaking

4.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?

A.Few students feel the need to learn public speaking

B.Training is necessary before you can speak with a script

C.In public speaking, the audience are more nervous than the speaker

D.Writing is just like making a public speech on paper

5.This selection is mainly about ___________.

A.the effort involved in writing

B.the similarities between writing and public speaking

C.learning how to make a public speech

D.learning how to talk on paper

A中的Few students與事實不符;B中的speak with a script在文中未有提及;C中的separated by a barrier錯誤。

Even plants can run a fever, especially when they're under attack by insects or

disease. But unlike humans, plants can have their temperature taken from 3,000 feet away-straight up. A decade ago, adapting the infrared (紅外線) scanning technology developed for military purposes and other satellites, physicist Stephen Paley came up with a quick way to take the temperature of crops to determine which ones are under stress. The goal was to let farmers precisely target pesticide(殺蟲劑) spraying rather than rain poison on a whole field, which invariably includes plants that don't have pest(害蟲) problems.

Even better, Paley's Remote Scanning Services Company could detect crop problems

before they became visible to the eye. Mounted on a plane flown at 3,000 feet at night ,an infrared scanner measured the heat emitted by crops. The data were transformed into a color-coded map showing where plants were running "fevers".Farmers could then spot-spray, using 50 to 70 percent less pesticide than they otherwise would.

The bad news is that Paley's company closed down in 1984, after only three years. Farmers resisted the new technology and long-term backers were hard to find. But with the renewed concern about pesticides on proce, and refinements in infrared scanning, Paley hopes to get back into operation.Agriculture experts have no doubt the technology works. "This technique can be used on 75 percent of agricultural land in the United States, "says George Oerther of Texas A&M. Ray Jackson, who recently retired from the Department of Agriculture, thinks.remote infrared crop scanning could be adopted by the end of the decade. But only if Paley finds the financial backing which he failed to obtain 10 years ago.

本文第一段的第一句話談到:「Even plants can run fever...by insects or disease.」

在第一段的原文中「The goal was to let farmers precisely target pesticide spraying...」

並呼籲說:「But only if Paley finds the financial backing which he failed to obtain 10years ago.」

在文章最後一段中說「But with the renewed concern...to get back into operation」由此可明顯看出,B的信息與本文內容相符,所以答案B是正確的;而A、C、D都與本文不符。

Due Attention Should Be Given To Spelling
Correct spelling is a basic skill in English study. However, nowadays many students do not pay much attention to it.
They have their own reasons for misspelling. First of all, they like an easy way of studying, which causes some omissions and changes in spelling. Second, the teachers might not be very strict in students』 spelling. In China, teachers seem to be more concerned with grammar and vocabulary but not spelling.
To change this situation, in my opinion, the teachers and the students should work together. On one and, the teachers should give more attention to students』 spelling, asking the students to be conscious of the importance of correct spelling from the very beginning of their English study. On the other hand, the students themselves are supposed to be aware that correct spelling is a must in English study.
To sum up, correct spelling is so important that both students and the teachers should spare no efforts to achieve correct spelling.

A South Korean city designed for the future takes on a life of its own

A) Getting around a city is one thing — and then there』s the matter of getting from one city to another. One vision of the perfect city of the future: a place that offers easy access to air travel.

In 2011, a University of North Carolina business professor named John Kasarda published a book called Aerotropolis: The Way We』ll Live Next. Kasarda says future cities should be built intentionally around or near airports. The idea, as he has put it, is to offer businesses 「rapid, long-distance connectivity on a massive scale.」

B) 「The 18th century really was a waterborne (水運的) century, the 19th century a rail century. the 20th century a highway, car, truck century一and the 21st century will increasingly be an aviation century, as the globe becomes increasingly connected by air,」 Kasarda says. Songdo, a city built from scratch in South Korea, is one of Kasarda』s prime examples. It has existed for just a few years.「 From the get-go, it was designed on the basis of connectivity and competitiveness,」says Kasada. 「The government built the bridge directly from the airport to the Songdo International Business District. And the surface infrastructure was built in tandem with the new airport .」

C) Songdo is a stone』s throw from South Korea』s Incheon Airport, its main international hub (樞紐). But it takes a lot more than a nearby airport to be a city of the future. Just building a place as an 「international business district」 doesn』t mean it will become one. Park Yeon Soo conceived (構想) this city of the future back in 1986. He considers Songdo his baby. 「I am a visionary,」 he says. Thirty years after he imagined the city, Park』s baby is close to 70 percent built, with 36.000 people living in the business district and 90,000 residents in greater Songdo. It』s about an hour outside Seoul, built on reclaimed tidal flats along the Yellow Sea, There』s a Coast Guard building and a tall trade tower, as well as a park, golf course and university.

D) Chances are you』ve actually seen this place. Songdo appears in the most famous music video ever to come ou of South Korea. 「Gangnam Style」 refers to the fashionable Gangnam district in Seoul. But some of the video was filmed in Songdo.「I don』t know if you remember, there was a scene in a subway station. That was not Gangnam. That was actually Songdo,」 says Jung Won Son, a professor of urban development at London』s Bartlett School of Planning, 「Part of the reason to shoot there is that it』s new and nice.」

E) The city was supposed to be a hub for global companies, with employees from all over the world. But hat』s not how it has turned out. Songdo』s reputation is as a futuristic ghost town. But the reality is more complicated. A bridge with big, light-blue loops leads into the business district. In the center of the main road, there』s a long line of flags of the world. On the corner, there』s a Starbucks and a 7-Eleven--all of the international brands that you see all over the world nowadays.

F) The city is not empty. There are mothers pushing strollers, old women with walkers -- even in the middle of the day. when it』s 90 degrees out. Byun Young-Jin chairs the Songdo real estate association and started selling property here when the first phase of the city opened in 2005. He says demand has boomed in the past couple of years. Most of his clients are Korean. In fact, the developer says, 99 percent of the homes here are sold to Koreans. Young families move here because the schools are great. And that』s the problem: Songdo has become a popular Korean city 一more popular as a residential area than a business one. It』s not yet the futuristic international business hub that planners imagined. 「It』s a great place to live. And it』s becoming a great place to work,」 says Scott Summers, the vice president of Gale International, the developer of the city. The floor-to-ceiling windows of his company』s offices overlook Songdo Central Park, with a canal full of kayaks and paddle boats. Shimmering (閃爍的)glass towers line the canal』s edge.

G) 「What』s happened is, because we focused on creating that quality of life first, which enabled the residents to live here, what has probably missed the mark is for companies to locate here,」 he says. 「There needs to be strong economic incentives.」 The city is still unfinished, and it feels a bit like a theme park. It doesn』t feel all that futuristic. There』s a high-tech underground trash disposal system. Buildings are environmentally friendly. Everybody』s television set is connected to a system that streams personalized language or exercise classes.

H) But Star Trek this is not. And to some of the residents, Songdo feels hollow. 「I』m, like, in prison for weekdays. That』s what we call it in the workplace,」 says a woman in her 20s. She doesn』t want to use her name for fear of being fired from her job. She goes back to Seoul every weekend. 「I say I』m prison-breaking on Friday nights.」 But she has to make the prison break in her own car. There』s no high-speed train connecting Songdo to Seoul, just over 20 miles away.

I) The man who first imagined Songdo feels frustrated. too. Park says he built South Korea a luxury vehicle, 「like Mercedes or BMW. It』s a good car now. But we』re waiting for a good driver to accelerate.」

But there are lots of other good cars out there, too. The world is dotted with futuristic, high-tech cities trying to attract the biggest international companies

J) Songdo』s backers contend that it』s still early, and business space is filling up—about 70 percent of finished offices are now occupied. Brent Ryan, who teaches urban design at MIT, says Songdo proves a universal principle. 「There have been a lot of utopian (烏托邦的) cities in history. And the reason we don』t know about a lot of them is that a lot of them have vanished entirely.」 In other words, when it comes to cities—or anything else—it is hard to predict the future.

36. Songdo』s popularity lies more in its quality of life than its business attraction.

37. The man who conceives Songdo feels disappointed because it has fallen short of his expectations.

38. A scene in a popular South Korean music video was shot in Songdo.

39. Songdo still lacks the financial stimulus for businesses to set up shop there.

40. Airplanes will increasingly become the chief means of transportation, according to a professor.

41. Songdo has ended up different from the city it was supposed to be.

42. Some of the people who work in Songdo complain about boredom in the workplace.

43. A business professor says that a future city should have easy access to international transportation.

44. Acording to an urban design professor, it is difficult for city designers to foresee what happen in the future.

45. Park Yeon So. Who envisioned Songdo, feels a parental connection with the city.

For example, we might do this by finding a more effective way to study or a better way to arrange our furniture, or we might make a new bination of camera lenses and filters to cr eate an unusual photograph.

A third part of creativity is the courage and drive to make use of our new ide as, to apply them to achieve some new results. To think up a new concept is one thing; to put the idea to work is another.

When I was studying at Yale, some phenomena puzzled me greatly. I found that Chinese students or Asian students were very polite in class while American students often interrupted the professor, asking questions and dominating the discussion. The Chinese students were not as aggressive as American students.

I was impressed by the role of the professor in the seminar***討論會***. The professor didn』t act as an authority, giving final conclusions, but as a reseac her looking for answers to questions together with the students. One lingui stic***語言的*** feature of his interacting with his students was that he used many modal***情態的*** verbs—far more than I did in Beiwai. When answering questions, he usually said, 「This is my personal opinion and it could be wrong.」 or 「You could be right, but you might find this point of view also interesting.」

In China, authorities are always supposed to give wise decisions and correct di rections. Therefore, students always expect the professor to give an answer to th e question. I still remember how frustrated they were when foreign teachers did not provide such an answer. Their expectations from authorities are much higher than that of American students. Once the Chinese students got the answer, they w ere sure about it.

Ecation in China is valued for united thinking. I remember American teachers who taught in our university plaining about the fact that Chinese students u niformly expressed the same idea in their English position. The examinations in America usually do not test a student』s ability to memorize the material but his ability to *** yze and solve problems. Ecation in America is valued not on ly as a means to obtain employment but as a process of enhancing critical thinking.

31.In the USA, when the students are in class, ____.

A.a Chinese student tends to be very active B.an American student likes to make trouble

C.a Chinese student likes to puzzle the teacher D.an American student tends to be vigorous

32.A teacher in the USA prefers to ____ when he answers questions.

A.be very sincere B.be very direct

C.be very self confident D.be very indifferent

33.What is the opinion of the author concerning the difference of teachin g methods between China and the USA?

A.He thinks that Chinese teaching metods can make students learn more.

B.He holds that the major purpose of Chinese teaching methods is to impro ve students』 remembrance.

C.He thinks that American teaching is ability oriented.

D.He holds that American teachers hate to give a test.

34.The author thinks that the relationship between the student and the te acher is ____.

A.more intimate in China B.closer in China C.looser in USA D.more harmonious in USA

35.The ecation in USA may proce some ____ graates.

A.talkative B.conventional C.creative D.imaginative

32.答案A。

Across the world, especially the wealthier parts, the mobile phone has taken the place of telephone as an electronic telecommunication device, with the majority of the alt, teenager and even child owning one. As this technology has become rife, its drawbacks, which can be seen from social, medical and technical perspectives, deserve people's greatest attention.

Similar to many other hi-tech procts, such as computers, mobile phones have detrimental effects on users' health. For example, long-time heavy phone users seem to be more prone to certain types of cancers, although evidence to date is inconclusive. Another lethal health concern is the link between mobile phones and road accidents. It is argued that motorists have a much higher risk of collisions and losing control of the vehicle when driving and talking on the phone simultaneously, despite sometimes using bands-free systems.

When the mobile phone has brought considerable convenience, people's obsession with convenience has meanwhile caused enormous disturbance. That's why the use of mobile phones has been prohibited in many public places, such as libraries, theatres, hospitals and even transports, such as trains, buses and aircrafts. Speaking at increased volume is considered impolite or even offensive, In schools, students are required to switch off cell phones before the class begins because mobile phones are responsible for a high amount of class disruptions.

When its downside persists, the mobile phone has proven indispensable in modern life. It is handheld, lightweight, portable and multi-functioned, allowing users to send text messages, exchange music files, make voice calls, browse Internet, and so forth. Meanwhile, within twenty years, mobile phones are expected to be more pervasive as technical advances and mass manufacture will make them low-cost personal items. Given those factors, the mobile phone will continue to perform its role as a key social tool, by which one keeps in touch with others much more easily than did the generations before.

As suggested above, the contribution of the mobile phone to the society is prominent and people's dependence on it for communication is an irreversible trend, although it has a number of problems that should be well handled.

Not surprisingly, many aspects of people's daily lives have undergone considerable changes because of the recent development in technology. It is a particular concern that the pace of everyday life is becoming faster, resulting from the development in cars, air travel, telecommunications technology and the Internet 。 As well as benefits, this trend is to bring problems.

On the positive side, the fast rhythm of life requires people to enhance efficiency when working and then allows them to enjoy longer leisure time. With the advance in telecommuncations people can make inquires by phone, instead of travelling long distances, Internet access makes it possible (for one to perform various tasks without leaving their offices. Even though people have to travel every now and then, for meeting business partners, visiting clients in other cities or other purposes, modem transport networks rece the amount of time they spend on commutes.

The acceleration of the pace of life also implies the expansion of people's social circle. In the past, social relationships were limited by physical factors such as geographical distance and low mobility, but nowadays, one can travel further and get acquainted with more people with those technological advances, such as the railroad, the automobile and the telephone. For instance, the rapid penetration of telecommunications technology has made the mobile phone a key social tool and people rely on their mobile phone address book to keep in touch with their friends.

On the negative side, the fast-paced lifestyle is responsible for the upsurge in lifestyle-related problems. Jobs become demanding and require workers' full commitment, resulting in their depression and pressure. Underneath the facade of continued contraction of official working hours, employees are actually working longer, primarily because fax, e-mail or other communication devices have made them accessible to their supervisors, colleagues and customers after work. They have to respond instantly to voice and email messages from others. Private life has to be sacrificed.

According to the facts outlined above, the doubts about the negative effects of the acceleration of pace of life are not well-grounded. People now enjoy greater well-being, which is reflected in more quality family time, less travel-related stress and close contact with friends and family members. However, they might have to accept frequent intrusions as a by-proct of convenient communication.

On Opening Psychological Courses

Recently, more and more ecators and common citizens suggest that universities and colleges open more courses which are helpful for students』 psychological health. Personally, I fully agree with their proposal for the following reasons.

On the one hand, the ever-increasing pressure of study at the moment and job-hunting in the future may lead to many psychological problems, such as anxiety, depression and even despair, and the psychological courses open a door for communication and relaxation. On the other hand, such courses can teach students how to regulate feelings and emotions under different situations, which is a good preparation for the future life in the complex society. Finally, these courses also introce good habits which are concive to one』s mental and psychological health. To be mature and qualified citizens in the society, students have to do more than study hard.

In a word, I warmly welcome the establishment of psychological courses in universities.

In my mind, they are good for students』 psychological development.
