If you add to this the effects of a sonar set mounted in the small nose of a torpedo rushing through the water at speeds up to 80 miles per hour with its consequent noise and vibration, plus hullborne vibrations from the power plant,it can be seen that only the most advanced electronic filtering gives any chance of success. 在整個if... 第一個定語為介詞片語「of a sonar set 」,修飾effects,譯為:「一套聲納設施的效果」;第二個定語為「mounted in the small nose」,過去分詞當定語:「被安裝在一個小鼻子上的」;第三個定語「of a torpedo」;「一個魚雷的」;第四個定語「rushing...」
所以,but一詞至關重要(還有類似的yet,however,although,nevertheless等)。4. What can you infer from the story? 或What is the implied meaning of this sentence?
而在主句中,我又抓住了它的主語that only the most advanced electronic filtering gives any chance of success和謂語can be seen。

A.事實詢問題;B.推理判斷題;
C.數據推算題;D.識圖解意題;

Like fine food, good writing is something we approach with pleasure and enjoy from the first taste to the last. And good writers, like good cooks, do not suddenly appear full-blown. Quite the opposite, just as the cook has to undergo a particular training, mastering the skills of his trade, the writer must sit at hisdesk and devote long hours to achieving a style in his writing, whatever its purpose is—schoolwork, matters of business, or purely social communication.
You may be sure that the more painstaking the effort, the more effective the writing, and the more rewarding.
There are still some faraway places in the world where you might find a public scribe to do your business or social writing for you, for money. There are a few managers who are lucky enough to have the service ofthat rare kind of secretary who can take care of all sorts of letter writing with no more than a quick note to work from. But for most of us, if there is any writing to be done, we have to do it ourselves.
We have to write school papers, business papers or home papers. We are constantly called on to put words to papers. It would be difficult to count the number of such words, messages, letters, and reports put intomails or delivered by hand, but the daily figures must be extremely large. What is more, everyone who writes expects, or at least hopes whatever he writes will be read, from first word to last, not just thrown into some 「letters-to-be-read」 files or into a wastepaper basket. This is the reason we bend our efforts toward learning and practicing the skills of interesting, effective writing.
Choose correct answers to the question:
1. In this passage, good writing is compared to fine food in that _______.
A. both writers and cooks have to work a long time every day

C. both are writers and cooks can earn a good living
D. both are enjoyable
2. A public "scribe" (Para 2, Line 1) is _____.
A.a secretary who does your business or social writing
B. a machine that does writing for you
C. a public school where writing is taught
D. a person who ears a living by writing for others
3. According to the passage, some managers don't have to do any letter writing because _____.
A. they rely on quick notes C. they have a computer to do it

4. According to the author, if your letter is thrown into some "letter-to-be-read" file, ______.
A. it will receive immediate attention
B. it will be dealt with by the secretary
C. it is likely to be neglected
D. it is meant to be delivered soon
5. The purpose of the author in writing this passage is _____.
A. to explain and persuade
B. to comment and criticize
C. to interest and entertain
D. to argue and demonstrate

There are two factors which determine an indivial's intelligence. The first is the sort of brain he is born with. Human brains differ considerably, some being more capable than others. But no matter how good a brain he has to begin with, an indivial will have a low order of intelligence unless he has opportunities to learn. So the second factor is what happens to the indivial—the sort of environment in which he is reared. If an indivial is handicapped envionmentally ,it is likely that his brain will fail to develop and he will never attain the level of intelligence of which he is capable.
The importance of environment in determining an indivial's intellingence can be demonstrated by the case history of the identical twins, Peter and Mark X. Being identical, the twins had identical brains at birth, and their growth processes were the same. When the twins were three months old , their parents died, and they were placed in separate foster homes. Peter was reated by parents of low intelligence in an isolatedcommunity with poor ecational pooprtunities.Mark was reared inthe home of well-to-do parents who had been to college. He was read to as a child , sent to good schools, and given every opportunity to be stimulated intellectually. This enviromental difference continued until the twins were in their late teens, when they were giben tesets to measure their intelligence. Mark's I.Q. was 125, twenty-five points higher than the average and fully forty points higher than his identical brother. Given equal opportunities , the twins , having identical brains, would have tested at roughly the same level.
1.This selection can best be titled_________.
a.Measuring Your Intelligence
b.Intelligence and Environment
c.The Case of Peter and Mark
d.How the brain Influences Intelligence
2.The beststatement of the main idea of this passage is that _____.
a.human brains differ considerably
b.the brain a person is born with is improtant in determining his intelligence
c.environment is crucial in determining a person's intelligence
d. persons having identical brains will have roughly the same intelligence
3.According to the passage , the average I.Q.is _____.
a.85
b.100
c.110
d.125
4.The case history of the twins appears to support the conclusion that _______.
a.indivial with identical brains seldom test at same level
b.an indivial's intelligence is determined only by his enviroment
c.lack of opportunity blocks the growth of intelligence
d.changes of enviroment proce changes in the structure of the brain
5.This passage suggests that an indivial 's I.Q.______.
a.can be predicted at birth
b.stays the same throuthout his life
c.can be increased by ecation

The economy of the United states after 1952 was the econnomy of a well-fed,almost fully employed people. Despit occasional alarms, the country escaped any postwar depression and lived in a state of boom. A n economic survey of the year 1955, a typical year of the 1950』s, may be typical as illustrating the rapid economic growth of the decade. The national output was value at 10 percent above that of 1954 (1955 output was estimated at 392 billion dollars). The proction of manufacturers was about 40 percent more than it had averaged in the years immediately following World War 2. The country』s business spent about 30billion dollars for new factories and machinery. National income available for spending was almost a third greater than it had been it had been in 1950. Consumers spent about 256 billion dollars; that is about 700 million dollars a day ,or about twenty-five million dollars every hour , all round the clock. Sixty-five million people held jobs and only a little more than two million wanted jobs but could not find them . Only agriculture complained that it was not sharing in the room. To some observers this was an ominous echo of the mid-1920』s . As farmer』s shre of their procts declined , marketing costs rose. But there were , among the observers of the national economy, a few who were not as confident as the majority .
