一天清早，大霧彌漫，我們正和幾個中非工人在緊張地採摘四季豆。「啊呀！」小李的叫聲震驚了寂靜的田野。大家以為他碰上了毒蛇，急忙趕了過去。「什麼事？」「剛才我采豆莢時，手碰到冷冰冰的東西，一看是條『怪蛇』，嚇了一跳。」「在哪裡？」大家在綠葉叢中找了一陣，沒見到「怪蛇」，以為是小李在開玩笑。「在這里！」小李用手一指，豆藤上真的掛著一條綠瑩瑩的四腳小蛇，皮膚和豆葉一模一樣，很難發現。這是條身長30厘米左右、似蛇非蛇的怪物。「變色龍！變色龍！」中非工人一看就叫了起來。我細細端詳著：這條變色龍全身翠綠。橢圓形的頭上長著三角形的嘴，兩眼凸起，兇相畢露。身軀呈長筒狀，隆起的背部酷似龜背，腹部兩側長著四隻短腳，尾巴尖細。盡管我們大聲叫喊，對著它指手畫腳，它卻依然一動也不動。「變色龍如此遲鈍，如何捕捉食物呢？」「你別看它可以連續幾個小時掛在枝葉上一動也不動，但它是似睡非睡地窺探著，伺機捕捉昆蟲。它的每隻眼睛都能單獨轉來轉去，分別觀望四面八方的東西。當它的兩隻眼睛同時注視著前方時，就會產生一種立體感，准確地判斷自己與昆蟲之間的距離，用舌頭捕獲食物。」中非工人朋加沙繪聲繪色地向我們介紹著。這時，一隻色彩繽紛的蝴蝶飛過來，離變色龍還有相當的距離，似睡非睡的變色龍，以迅雷不及掩耳之勢，「刷」地伸出它那長得驚人的舌頭——舌頭的長度超過它身長的一倍，剎那間，那隻彩蝶已被捲入它的口中，成為美餐。我們被它嚇了一跳。「變色龍真的會變色嗎？」「真的，不信，馬上試試看。」朋加沙抓起變色龍，先把它放在香蕉葉上，它的皮膚變成了香蕉葉色。接著，又把變色龍放在棕色的泥土上，我們眼看著它慢慢地從綠色變為棕色。再把它放在水泥板上，又從棕色變為淺灰色。變色龍，果然名副其實。朋加沙告訴我們，變色龍數量不多，難得碰到。於是我們將它放回了原始森林。____________________________作者劉夢熊。選作課文時文字有改動。
