Passage 1

Passage 2

Sigmund Freud

Sigmund Freud was born in 1856 in Moravia, which is now the Czech Republic. His family moved to Vienna when Sigmund was four years old. He was the oldest of his mother』s eight children and her favorite. Sigmund loved to read and he was always at the top of his class. He had no interest in sports or outdoor activities, except walking. The family apartment had only four bedrooms, but Sigmund』s mother gave him his own room so he could study in peace. He rarely joined the family for meals. Instead he ate alone in his room, surrounded by his favorite books.

Freud first thought about studying law, but then he decided to study medicine. He enrolled at the University of Vienna in 1873. His early days at the university were difficult because some of his clas *** ates discriminated against him because he was Jewish. This made Freud more determined than ever to do his best.

Freud received his medical degree in 1881. For the next few years he continued his laboratory work. After his marriage, Freud opened his own psychiatry practice. He worked with patients who were very depressed or behaved in strange ways. Later, he started to treat patients in a new way, called 「psycho *** ysis.」 Psycho *** ysis uses different techniques to help people.

In 1938, the German army invaded Austria. World War II was beginning, and life became terrible for millions of Jews, including Sigmund Freud. The army burnt many of his books in public and arrested him secretly. Freud needed a miracle to save his life. The miracle came when U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt asked the German army to set him free. They agreed to let Freud leave Austria but they wanted 20,000 pounds sterling approximately $32,000. A Greek princess who was once a patient of Freud』s paid the money. However, Freud had to sign a paper saying that he was treated well by the German army. Freud signed the paper and added in his own handwriting, 「I can most warmly remend the Gestapo to anyone.」 On June 4, 1938, Freud and his family moved to a town near London. Fifteen months later, in September 1939, Freud died at the age of 83.

Dale Carnegie

The name of Dale Carnegie is synonymous with success and influence. Perhaps the most well-known author in the field of munication and public speaking, Dale Carnegie was born into poverty on a *** all farm in Missouri, on November 24, 1888. His father, named John William Caraagie, was a poor farmer. His mother, named Amanda Elizabeth Camagie, worked with his father on the farm. Dale Camegey came from humble beginnings. Yearly floods devastated the farm and kept the family poor.

The family was in debt, and as a young boy he had to get up at 4 a.m. every day to milk the cows and help on the farm, then to go to school. As a boy, Dale was known for one thing: reciting. He used his talents in church functions and local events. In high School he joined the debating team, but never won a debate. Frustrated, he was determined to go to college and attended a state teacher』s school. He couldn』t afford to board at the school, so he rode a horse each day to class. It was said that he practiced his reciting to the horse!

As a child, Carnegie lacked of confidence and was often full of worries in those days. One day, while helping his mother pit cherries, he began to cry. His mother said, 「Dale, what in the world are you crying about?」 He blubbered, 「I am afraid I am going to be buried alive!」

When thunderstorms came, he worried for fear he would be killed for lightning. When hard times came, he worried for fear they wouldn』t have enough to eat. He worried for fear he would go to hell when he died. He was terrified for fear an older boy, Sam White, would cut off his big ears 一 as he threatened to do... Later he finally found out that 99 percent of his worries did not happen.

It』s this humble and unconfident little boy who became a lecturer, giving hundreds of thousands of people confidence and optimi *** all over the world. It』s not difficult for one to imagine how arous the development process involved has been.

Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche

Nietzsche』s early childhood is itself a story of writing, reading, illness and isolation. He was sentto the local school but then gained a place at the elite academy of Pforta in 1858. By 1862,wefind the young Nietzsche already recording his doubts about the religious faith that dominatedhis home background. He was turning even then to ideas of evolution, and already had begunto speculate on the human condition: 「...we scarcely even know whether humanity itself isonly a step.」 Jaspers remarks that 「Nietzsche philosophises as a boy.」

Nietzsche was certainly an intense boy, often lonely and absorbed by ideas. In 1863,we findhim already struggling to convey the mass of his thoughts on paper: 「I stare for a long timeat the white paper in front of me, troubled by the confused crowd of themes.」 This sense of「abundance」 is one of the experiences given to the character Zarathustra.

In 1865, Nietzsche went to Leipzig as a student, where he shifted to the study of classicalphilology, the ancient languages and their origins. Already he saw his own future in learning andteaching: 「My goal is to bee a truly practical teacher...」

Nietzsche was searching for fellow spirits and in 1865 he discovered in a bookshop the majorwork of Schopenhauer, The World as Will and Representation. For the student Nietzsche, thi *** ook by his older contemporary was a mirror of his own thoughts and struggles. Throughouthis life, Nietzsche needed heroes of thought, models for his own quest.

In 1867, he enrolled in the army, but he still kept on learning. Now Nietzsche was acquiringother heroes, such as the ancient Greek thinker Democritus. In 1868, Nietzsche was readingand writing about the late eighteenth-century German authority Kant. In the same year, hemet the poser Richard Wagner whom he described as 「a fabulously vivacious, fiery man」 .In 1871, Nietzsche started work on what became his first book, The Birth of Tragedy.

In January 1883, Nietzsche wrote Book I of TSZ in 10 days. The period after that was a time ofintense proctiveness. He died in Aug. 24, 1900.

When in Rome the pope stopped to pray for the President』s recovery and immediately sent him a personal message with his prayers and hopes.

These were worrisome times. It had not been so long before, ring a Vatican meeting with an aide to the pope』s secretary of state, that William Casey left with a final word of caution.

The CIA station in Rome had passed along a curious, and perhaps important, piece of information. When Lech Walesa had visited the pope, his host had been a man from the Italian Labour Confederation. The CIA had been told by Italian counter-intelligence officials that the host was working for Bulgaria. Since Bulgarians were under the control of the Soviets, this could either mean that Solidarity』s plans were compromised or that Walesa was in danger.

On May 13, 1981, at 5 pm, the pontiff emerged for his weekly general audience in St, Peter』s Square. After entering the open 「popemobile」,the pontiff was riding around the colonnade. His aide Stanislaw Dziwisz was next to him.

Suddenly Dziwisz heard a deafening noise, and pigeons all over the square took flight. Then the pope slumped against him.

「I knew the Holy Father was hit」, Dziwisz says 「but there was no sign of blood or a wound on him . Then I asked him. 『Where?』 he replied, 『In my stomach.』」

The pope had been wounded in his stomach, right elbow and index finger of his left hand. He was transferred to an ambulance, which sped him to a hospital.

「Mary, my mother! Mary, my mother!」 the Holy Father kept repeating. His eyes were closed, and he was in great pain, At the Gemelli Clinic the pope was rushed first to a tenth-floor room reserved for a papal emergency and then to an operating room. He』d lost a great deal of blood, and because his condition was critical, last rites were administered.

The operation lasted five hours and 20 minutes. Twenty two inches of John Paul Ⅱ』s intestine were removed. 「Hope graally returned ring the operation.」 Said Dziwisz. 「It became clear that no vital organ had been hit and that he just might survive.」

Like the bullet that almost killed Ronald Reagan, this one had passed a few millimeters from the aorta. 「If it had hit, death would have been instantaneous,」 Dziwisz observed. 「It did not touch any vital point. It was really miraculous.」

「One hand fired,」 the pope said later, 「and another hand guided the bullet.」

The triggerman was apprehended almost immediately. He was identified as Mehmet Ali Agca, a Turkish terrorist. Agca had publicly vowed to kill the pope ring the potiff』s 1979 visit to Turkey.

In recent years, ever mindful of a need for dialogue with the Jews, John Paul Ⅱmade the grand gesture of crossing the Tiber River to visit the main synagogue of Rome, something no pope had ever done before. As Roman Jews know, their community is older than the oldest Christian church. When Saints Peter and Paul came to Rome, the Torah was already being read and the Sabbath observed in the capital of the Roman Empire.

Onlookers recall that when he delivered his speech in the synagogue, John Paul Ⅱat times seemed close to breaking down. Once, as a boy, he』d gone to the synagogue in his village with his father to a choir sing 「Ani Maamin」 (I believe), which had been chanted by condemned Jews in the death camps on their way to the gas chambers. As the voice of the choir swelled, the pope bent forward, his head bowed and his hand covering his mouth.

Despite john paul Ⅱ』s declining health, the last years of his pontificate24 have seen a burst of activity. And though his hand is increasingly weary as he raises it to bless the faithful25, it points to a wider horizon.

(The Beauty of a Shabby Little Dandelion)

Spring has come for the flowers and trees, in the forest and fields. Spring has also come on the wild flowers under the fence and on a small apple tree. There were red bursting flower buds hanging on the fresh apple tree branches.

The apple Tree Branches were proud of themselves knowing that they were very beautiful. A Countess admired the branches, so she broke one of them off, held it in her hand, and she went back to her splendid castle in her wonderful carriage. The Countess put the branch among the fresh and green beech trees, and she smiled with satisfaction.

The apple Tree Branch held up his head and looked at many kinds of people who came in and out. They all showed different reactions to the Apple Tree Branch. All the people reacted differently when they saw the Apple Tree branch. Some were expressionless without a word, some overpraised the beauty of the Apple Tree Branch, and others gazed at him with a satisfied look.

Seeing these various reactions from people, the Apple Tree Branch realized that people have as diverse personalities as plants and flowers do and that they are all different. The Apple Tree branch looked at the fields and a garden through the open window. There were shabby flowers and plants as well as beautiful ones in the garden.

'Those grasses are so pathetic. It's not their fault they have such ugly and squalid names. However, everything is different in this world.' The apple Tree Branch sympathized and looked at the little flowers blooming next to the fields and streams.

At that time, the Sun kissed the Apple Tree Branch, a dandelion in the field, the abundant beautiful flowers, and the shabby flowers and said, "Yes, there is difference among everything, but throw away your prejudice and look ahead with a broad point of view. What do you think the poorest plant is?" "A Dandelion. People do not use it even for a bouquet, and it is so common that people trample it down carelessly. It is not different from a weed at all."

At that time, children ran across the field, rolled about on the lawn, and picked and kissed the dandelions. They made necklaces and garlands of them. They looked wonderful with the golden flowers and green stems.

The seeds stuck to the stalks of the dandelions, and they were as beautiful as white feathers. When the children blew out with a puff, the seeds of the dandelions fluttered away as if they had wings.

"Look at that! Now, do you understand how beautiful those flowers are, and how much pleasure they can give us?" The Sun said to the Apple Tree Branch. "They are only for children." The Apple Tree Branch answered.

At that time, an old lady g in the ground of the field and picked the roots of the dandelions. She will make tea, take it to the doctor who makes medicine, and earn money with the roots of the dandelions.

"But, beauty is more valuable than those things. Only elected ones can join the Kingdom of Beauty. Not every plant can be the same, just as people can't be the same." The Apple Tree Branch said.

Later some people came into the room. The Countess who brought the Apple Tree Branch to the castle was one of them. She brought a stalk of dandelion seeds much more carefully than when she brought the Apple Tree Branch.

"Look at this. Isn't this beautiful? I will draw a picture of this dandelion with the apple tree branch. Everyone says that the apple tree branch is more beautiful, but this humble dandelion has a different kind of beauty. Even though the apple tree branch and the dandelion look different from each other, they are all beautiful." The Countess said filled with admiration.

The Sun smiled and kissed the shabby dandelion and the Apple Tree Branch. The Apple Tree Branch blushed his own petals with shame.

(The Happy Couple)

A long time ago, there was a happy prince and princess in a country. They took care of and loved each other very much, and their country was happy, too. Therefore they didn't envy anything else. There was one thing they worried about. They wanted to make sure they could live happily forever like this.

One day, one of the subjects found out the couple's worry and told them, "Prince, I heard that there is a magic charm, and it can protect you from any unfortunate event. If you always carry the magic charm with you, your fear and worry will disappear."

"Is it true? Where can I find that charm?" The prince asked him joyfully. "There is an old man in the forest, and he knows about everything. You can ask him."

The couple visited the old man, and asked for help with their worries and fears. The old man nodded his head as if he knew everything and said, "Travel all around the world. Then, when you meet a very happy couple, ask them to cut a piece of their underwear. If you keep the piece of the underwear, your fear and worry will go away."

The couple appreciated the old man's kindness and set out on the journey. The couple wandered around everywhere and heard about a happy knight and his wife of one town. They went to visit the knight. "Are you really happy like the rumor?" Then the knight answered. "Of course, we are, Prince. But our only worry and problem is that we didn't have any children."

They had to find an absolutely happy couple, so they continued their journey. They visited a happy couple who were famous for their happiness in the next town. And they asked the couple if they were really happy. The couple answered. "Yes, we are very happy. But we have too many children. A mother with a large brood never has a peaceful day. We worry too much about our children."

They could not get a magic charm this time too, and kept going on their trip. It was very hard to find the happiest couple in the world. One day, the prince couple met a shepherd and his wife in a big field.

The shepherd was playing a flute and driving a herd of sheep, and his wife took their two children to him. As soon as the shepherd saw his family, he ran to them directly. He kissed and embraced each of them by turns. They sat in a circle and had lunch after the wife had prepared it.

The prince couple watched for a while and approached them. "Excuse me. You look so happy!" The shepherd smiled and said, "Sure, any king or queen can never be happier than we are."

The prince couple thought that they finally found what they were looking for. "I am sorry, but could you please cut a piece of your underwear for us?" The prince couple asked them very politely, but the shepherd couple felt confused and said, "Of course we would like to help you, but we don't wear any underwear."

In the end, the couple set out on their journey again with nothing. Finally they came back to their home because they were so tired, and because they couldn't find the magic charm too. As soon as they came back to their country, they visited the old man.

The prince told their story to the old man and asked him. "Why did you make us suffer from the long trip for a charm which doesn't even exist?" The old man smiled and said, "Well, do you really think your trip was a vain effort? Think about it carefully. While you were traveling around, you learned many things about how other people live, didn't you?"

The prince thought to himself for a while and said, "Ah, now I understand. You mean that true happiness is up to yourself." The prince's wife smiled and nodded her head. The happy couple held their hands and looked in each other's eyes.

The old man said as he watched them. "The true magic charm that you are searching for is in your mind. Keep it carefully from now on. Then, you'll never be unhappy with whatever comes your way."

(The Hen and the Little Girl)

In a country home, a mother hen and her cute chicks were living happily. A little girl came to visit the country home, but was very bored. One night, the girl went into the chicken house. As soon as she went in, there was disorder.

Here and there cries of the chickens could be heard. The father, who was inside, woke up.

The girl went into the chicken house, again, the next day. There was a racket again, as the chickens were frightened. The moon in the night sky was worried. This time, the little girl's father will not be forgiving.

Finally, the sleeping father woke up. "Why are the chickens crying? By chance" The father was angry and came out to the yard.

"What's wrong with you? Is it okay to bother animals that can't talk? You need to be punished." When the little girl saw her father's angry face, she began to cry.

"It is true that I bothered the chickens, but I was bored yesterday. But today I went in to apologize to the chickens. I was going to hug the chickens."

When the father heard what his daughter said, a smile quickly appeared on his face. "You are truly my daughter." The father praised his daughter. He was proud of his daughter that knew how to apologize. The moon in the sky gave a big laugh, too.

The bull charged the wall furiously again and again, but although he bruised his head and chipped his horns, the mouse stayed safely inside his hole。 After a time the bull gave up and sank down to rest again。

As soon as the bull was asleep, the little mouse crept to the mouth of the hole, pattered across the yard, bit the bull again -- this time on the nose -- and rushed back to safety。 As the bull roared helplessly the mouse squeaked:

A man came home from work late, tired and irritated, to find his 5-year old son waiting for him at the door.

「Daddy, may I ask you a question?」

Yeah sure, what is it?」 replied the man.

「Daddy, how much do you make an hour?」

「That』s none of your business. Why do you ask such a thing?」 the man said angrily.

「I just want to know. Please tell me, how much do you make an hour?」 pleaded the little boy.

「If you must know, I make $20 an hour.」

「Oh,」 the little boy replied, with his head down. Looking up, he said, 「Daddy, may I please borrow $10?」

The father was furious, 「If the only reason you asked that is so you can borrow some money to buy a silly toy or some other nonsense, then you march yourself straight to your room and go to bed. Think about why you are being so selfish. I work hard every day for such childish behavior.」

The little boy quietly went to his room and shut the door. The man sat down and started to get even angrier about the little boy』s questions. How dare he ask such questions only to get some money? After about an hour or so, the man had calmed down, and started to think: Maybe there was something he really needed to buy with that $10 and he really didn』t ask for money very often.

The man went to the door of the little boy』s room and opened the door.

備碧「Are you asleep, son?」 He asked.

「No daddy, I』m awake,」 replied the boy.

「I』ve been thinking, maybe I was too hard on you earlier,」 said the man, 「It』s been a long day and I took out my aggravation on you. Here』s the $10you asked for.」

The little boy sat straight up, *** iling. 「Oh, thank you daddy!」 He yelled. Then, reaching under his pillow he pulled out some crumpled up bills. The man, seeing that the boy already had money, started to get angry again. The little boy slowly counted out his money, then looked up at his father.

「Why do you want more money if you already have some?」 the father grumbled.

「Because I didn』t have enough, but now I do,」 the little boy replied. 「Daddy, I have $20 now. Can I buy an hour of your time? Please e home early tomorrow. I would like to have dinner with you.」
