Passage C

From the time we were babies we have been taught manners. We are taught how to hold a knife and fork and not to talk with our mouths full. We are taught how to shake hands and when to stand and when to sit and the way to introce people.

Sometimes good manners in one place are very bad manners somewhere else. Almost everywhere eating together means that people are very friendly to each other. But in parts of Polynesia(波利尼西亞)it is bad manners to be seen eating beside each other. So they politely turn their backs to each other when they are taking food.

Some East Africans spit four times as a kind of blessing(祝福).They do it to show that

they want a sick person to get well,or to bless a new-born baby. In most other places, spitting means something completely different. It usually shows an unhealthy habit. In many

countries,it may mean that you hate someone.

When we go to visit someone we say"Hello!"Or"How are you?" or things like that.

But if you are visiting an East African village, everyone will be very careful not to pay attention to you, The polite thing there will be for you to go quietly, without speaking to anyone, and sit beside your friend. You should wait until he has finished what he is doing and then he will begin talking to you.

In a village in Arab,a visitor will walk behind all the tents until he gets to the one he wants to visit. If he passes in front,he will be invited into each tent and asked to eat. It is rude to refuse.

1. From this passage we know .

A. it's good manners to use a knife and fork to eat

C. it's good manners not to talk with our mouths full

D. how to shake hands when we introce people

3. If you visit an East African village, you .

A. should say"Hello!"or"How are you?"to others

B. should talk to the villagers quietly

C. should be very careful and not to pay any attention to others

D. must wait until your friend has finished his work and then begin to talk to him

最後我送給大家一個典故,一個天使angel曾經問過上帝這樣一個問題,你們要聽好:"when did Noah build the Ark?

Every morning, the newspaper chief editor(主編) holds a meeting with the reporters. They discuss the main events(事件) of the day. Reporters are then sent to cover the events.

As soon as the reporters know what to write about, they get down to work. They telephone people and fix a time for a face-to-face interview with them. Sometimes they do telephone interviews. Checking information is very important. They go to the newspaper’s own library to look up any information that they need. This is called “doing one’s homework”.

At the same time, the picture editor decides which photographs will be used for the next day’s paper. All the people who work on a newspaper must be able to work fast. Reporters have to stop working on one story and start working at once on the important new one. They must find out the new information as quickly as possible. Later in the day, everything is put together at the news desk. Reporters return, type their stories into the computer and hand them to the editor.

The chief editor decides which will be the most important story on the front page. Sometimes this will have to be changed if something more important happens late in the day. Other editors read the stories which the reporters have written and make any necessary changes.

Finally, there is no more time left for adding new stories, and the time for printing(印刷) the newspaper has come. This is done on fast-moving printing machines. “When can I get a cell phone?” The answer is when your parents think you need one, though many kids seem to be getting them around age 12 or 13. Some younger kids may have them because their parents see it as a matter of safety and convenience. For example, a kid can call mom and dad when sports practice is over. And a cell phone can give kids almost instant access(快捷通道) to their parents if something goes wrong or they need help. It can give parents quick access to their kids so they can check on them and make sure they’re OK.

If you do get a cell phone, make some rules with your parents, such as how many minutes you’re allowed to spend on the phone, when you can use your phone, when the phone must be turned off, and what you will do if someone calls you too often, and so on.

You’ll also have to learn to take care of the phone in your life. Keep it charged(充電) and store it in the safe place so it doesn’t get lost. And whatever you do, don’t use it in the bathroom. I know someone who dropped her phone in the toilet!

Hi, Louis!

I'm writing to tell you something about the customs and festivals.

Everyone loves holidays since one doesn't need to go to school or work. Although all holidays mean no school and work, but not all of them are the same. On some of them you go out with friends; on others you stay home to eat, talk, and have fun with your family. For example in the U.S., everyone thinks New Year's Eve and New Year are both for partying with friends. Christmas is the time to stay home and exchange gifts with family members. The opposite is true in Japan though. For example, in Japan, New Year is for spending time with the family to eat, talk, have fun, and go to the temples. But Christmas is for boy and girl friends to go out and exchange gifts. Originally Christmas should be to celebrate the birth of Christ.

I have been interested in foreign customs since I was little. If you learn these different holiday customs, you will learn about different histories and cultures. This is much more interesting than learning them at the library from morning to evening.

Love,

Sue

New York is one of the most exciting cities in the world.

You might want to do some shopping in New York. Fifth Avenue is probably New York's most famous shopping street, but if you go, be prepared to "window shop"only. This is shopping for the rich. There are other, less expensive shopping areas nearby, and you'll soon come across famous stores such as Bloomingdales, Macy's and FAO Schwartz.

And if you've brought your rollerblades, then a visit to Central Park is a must. This is a large, open park right in the middle of Manhattan, but if you thought that people came here to relax, sit down for a few minutes and get away from the rush of New York life, then you'd be wrong. Nobody sits in Central Park: they run, jog(慢跑), and most of all they rollerblade.

When you leave New York, you might be tired, even poor and overweight, but the one thing you won't be is bored!

2. What do some waiters and waitresses in New York wear on their feet?

In the USA, there are many types of restaurants. Fast food restaurants are very famous. You can find McDonald's and Kentucky Fried Chicken in many countries around the world. You look at a menu above the counter, and say what you'd like to eat. You pay the person who serves you. You take your food and sit down or take it away. There's no need to leave a tip.

In a coffee shop you sit at the counter or at a table. You don't wait for the waitress to show you where to sit. She usually brings you coffee when you sit down. You tell her what you'd like to eat and she brings it to you. You pay the cashier as you leave. A diner is like a coffee shop but usually looks like a railway carriage.

In a family restaurant the atmosphere is casual, but the waitress shows you where to sit. Often the waitress tells you her name, but you don't need to tell her yours. If you don't eat everything, your waitress gives you a doggy bag to take your food home. You add an extra fifteen percent to the bill as a tip.

In top class restaurants, you need a reservation and you need to arrive on time. The waiter shows you where to sit. If you have wine, he may ask you to taste it. You can only refuse it if it tastes bad, not if you don't like it. When you get your bill, check it and then add fifteen to twenty percent to it as a tip for the waiter.

When you want to go shopping, decide how much money you can spend for new clothes. Think about the kind of clothes you really need. Then look for those clothes on sale(銷售).

When talking to an Indian, he would often shake his head. The visitors might think that the Indian did not like what they said. But, in fact, they would be completely wrong.

Indians always shake their heads when they talk to each other. It does not have the same meaning as “No”. If someone wants to visit India, he should know this, or it will give him some trouble.

One day, a foreign officer went to India on business. He hired a car and an Indian to drive it. When he told his driver to send him to his office, the Indian shook his head at once. The officer said again, and the driver shook his head again. At last, the officer, of course, got angry.

“How dare you refuse my order?” he shouted. “Drive me to my office at once!”

The driver answered in quite loud voice, too. “Yes, sir!” But to the officer’s surprise, the driver shook his head at the same time.

The car started, and the foreign officer was now too surprised to say a word. He thought about it for a while, and then he nodded with a smile, “‘No’ means ‘Yes’ here!”

B. he agreed with others
