It was summer, and my dad wanted to treat me to a vacation like never before. He decided to take me on a trip to the Wild West.
We took a plane to Albuquerque, a big city in the state of New Mexico. We reached Albuquerque in the late afternoon. Uncle Paul, my dad's friend, picked us up from the airport and drove us up to his farm in Pecos.
His wife Tina cooked us a delicious dinner and we got to know his sons Ryan and Kyle. My dad and I spent the night in the guestroom of the farm house listening to the frogs and water rolling down the river nearby. Very early in the morning, Uncle Paul woke us up to have breakfast. The day starts at dawn on my farm,he said. After breakfast, I went to help Aunt Tina feed the chickens. while my dad went with Uncle Paul to take the sheep out to graze(吃草). I was impressed to see my dad and Uncle Paul riding horses. They looked really cool.
In the afternoon, I asked Uncle Paul if I could take a hose ride, and he said yes, as long as my dad went with me. I wasn't going to take a horse ride by myself anyway. So, my dad and I put on our new cowboy hats, got on our horses, and headed slowly towards the mountains. Don't be late for supper,Uncle Paul cried, and keep to the track so that you don't get lost! 'OK! ' my dad cried back. After a while Uncle Paul and his fam house were out of sight. It was so peaceful and quiet and the colors of the brown rocks, the deep green pine trees, and the late afternoon sun mixed to create a magic scene. It looked like a beautiful woven(編織的)blanket spread out upon the ground just for us.
Suddenly a little rabbit jumped out in front of my horse.

Paragraph 1
Suddenly a little rabbit jumped out in front of my horse. Instinctively, I yelled out loud, pulling back the reins hard in order to stop the horse from hurting the little creature. Badly startled by the sudden incident, the horse sped off the track into another direction. Dad followed closely behind, calling out to tell me how to soothe the terrified horse and I did as told. Finally, the horse calmed down, but we seemed to get lost, unable to go back to the mountain road.
Paragraph 2
We had no idea where we were and it was getting dark. Wandering around, we were still stuck in the dilemma. Much to our delight, the sound of water in the distance caught our attention and drove us to the riverbank. Dad proposed that we should walk along the river which may lead us to the farm house and nothing seemed better than that. Time appeared to be merrier and shorter when I stayed together with Dad and before long, the farm house came into sight. What a thrilling but memorable experience it was!

Li Jiang 6 July, Sunny
Our family will go on a trip next month and need a suitcase. Two days ago, Mom asked me to find relevant information on the internet. But the information I got was rich and varied, or even contradictory. Confused, I simply based my decision on the ratings. Within five minutes, we ordered the one we were satisfied with. This afternoon, Mom received the case and told me she liked it very much.

Su Hua 6 July, Sunny
This morning, our family went out, hanging round in the downtown area. We found a rating of the Top Ten Restaurants, and went into one of them. We spent quite a lot of money, but were not happy. Mom complained a lot, and said that despite its high ratings, the food was not to our taste. I was puzzled. Should I believe in these ratings, or should I not?

1. 用約30個詞概括上述利用排名(ratings)進行消費的現象;
1. 寫作過程中不能直接引用原文語句;
2. 作文中不能出現真實姓名和學校名稱;
As a major channel of consumption information, the rating is an efficient source of information for shopping in our own consumption. Interestingly, the same rating may have different influences on different consumers.
I tend to consult consumption ratings whatever I purchase. Firstly, the higher rating means the higher quality of the proct, or better service. Based on the ratings, I bought my beloved backpack, saw interesting films and tasted delicious foods. Secondly, ratings can save time to make decisions in shopping. For example, there are huge amounts of reference books which I am often confused to choose from. In that case, it is both convenient and economical to buy books according to the ratings.
There is no doubt that it is unwise to depend completely on the ratings in consumption. The advantages and disadvantages of ratings are often closely related. It is necessary to hold an objective attitude towards ratings.
Nowadays, most commodities or services are rated through certain channels. These ratings, easy to access, are playing an increasingly important role in customers' purchase decision. However, results are sometimes unsatisfactory.
There is no denying that such ratings might bring convenience to consumers, but they are often misleading and unreliable. As we all know, most of the ratings are based on others' judgment on the proct or service concerned. Every judgment comes from a specific need or a unique psychological state. Apparently, blindly following others' advice will affect our own judgment. Another fact should not be neglected that some of the ratings are the outcome of a careful manipulation of companies or sellers. It has become a common practice for some to pay for good ratings on their procts or services so as to increase their sales.
Therefore, we should give a second thought to these ratings whenever we go shopping.

It doesn『t e as a surprise to you to realizethat it makes no difference what you read or study ifyou can『歷枝t remember it. You just waste your valuabletime. Maybe you have already discovered some cleverways to keep yourself from forgetting.

One dependable aid that does help youremember what you study is to have a specificpurpose or reason for reading. You remember better what you read when you know why you『rereading.

Why does a clerk in a store go away and leave you when your reply to her offer to help is―No, thank you. I『m just looking‖ ? Both you and she know that if you aren『t sure what youwant, you are not likely to find it. But suppose you say instead, ―Yes, thank you. I want a pairof sun glasses.‖ She says,‖ Right this way, please.‖ And you and she are off-both eager to lookfor exactly what you want.

It『s quite the same with your studying. If you choose a book at random***隨意***, ―just look‖for nothing in particular, you are likely to get just that-nothing. But if you do know what youwant, and if you have the right book, you are almost sure to get it. Your reasons will vary; theywill include reading or studying ―to find out more about‖, ―to understand the reason for‖, ―to find out how‖ .A good student has a clear purpose or reason for what he is doing.

This is the way it works. Before you start to study, you say to yourself some thing like this: ―I want to know why Stephen Vincent Benet happened to write about America. I『m readingthis article to find out.‖ Or, ―I am going to go over this story to see what life was like inmedieval ***中世紀的***England.‖ Because you know what you are reading or studying, you relatethe information to your purpose and remember it better.

Reading is not one single activity. At least two important processes go on at the same time.As you read, you take in ideas rapidly and accurately. But at the same time you express yourown ideas to yourself as you react to what you read. You have a kind of mental conversationwith the author. If you express your ideas orally, they may sound like this:‖ Yes, I agree. That『 *** y opinion too.‖ or ―Ummmm, I thought that record was broken much earlier. I『d bettercheck those dates,‖ or ―But there are some other facts to be considered!‖ You don『t just sitthere taking in ideas-you do something else, and that something else is very important.

This extra process of thinking about what you read includes judging it, relating it to whatyou already know, and using it for your own purposes. In other words, a good reader is acritical reader. One part of critical reading, as you have discovered, is to distinguish***辨認***between facts and opinions. Facts can be checked by evidence***證據***. Opinions are one『s ownpersonal reactions. Another part of critical reading is judging source***出處***. Still another part isdrawing accurate conclusions.

1.If you cannot remember what you read or study______.

A. it is no surprise

B. it means you have not really learned anything

C. it means you have not chosen the right book

D. you realize it is of no importance

2.Before you start reading, it is important______.

A. to make sure why you are reading

B. to relate the information to your purpose

C. to remember what you read

D. to choose an interesting book

3.Reading activity includes______.

A. only two reasons

B. mainly drawing exact conclusions

C. mainly learning about ideas and judging them critically

D. only distinguishing between facts and opinions

4.A. good reader is one who______.

It was a village in India. The people were poor. However, they were not unhappy. After all, their forefathers had lived in the same way for centuries.

Then one day, some visitors from the city arrived. They told the villagers there were some people elsewhere who liked to eat frog's legs. However, they did not have enough frogs of their own ,and so they wanted to buy frogs from other places.

This seemed like money for nothing. There were millions of frogs in the fields around, and they were no use to the villagers. All they had to do was catch them. Agreement was reached, and the children were sent into the fields to catch frogs. Every week a truck arrived to collect the catch and hand over the money. For the first time, the people were able to dream of a better future. But the dream didn't last long.

The change was hardly noticed at first, but it seemed as if the crops were not doing so well. More worrying was that the children fell ill more often, and, there seemed to be more insects around lately.

The villagers decided that they couldn't just wait to see the crops failing and the children getting weak. They would have to use the money earned to buy pesticides (殺蟲劑) and medicines. Soon there was no money left.

Then the people realized what was happening. It was the frog. They hadn't been useless. They had been doing an important job—eating insects. Now with so many frogs killed, the insects were increasing more rapidly. They were damaging the crops and spreading diseases.

Now,the people are still poor. But in the evenings they sit in the village square and listen to sounds of insects and frogs. These sounds of the night now have a much deeper meaning.

A. worked very hard for centuries

B. dreamed of having a better life

A. The frogs were easy money.

B. They needed money to buy medicine.

3. What might be the cause of the children's sickness?

A. The crops didn't do well.

B. There were too many insects.

C. The visitors brought in diseases.

D. The pesticides were overused.

4. What can we infer from the last sentence of the text?

A. Happiness comes from peaceful life in the country.

B. Health is more important than money.

C. The harmony between man and nature is important.

D. Good old days will never be forgotten.

Somali pirates (海盜) robbed three Thai fishing ships with 77 sailors on board nearly 1,200 miles off the Somali coast, the farthest-off-shore attack to date, an officer said Tuesday.

Pirates have gone farther south and east in answer to increased patrols(巡邏) by warships off the Somali shore. The robbing of the three ships Sunday was about 600 miles outside the normal operation area for the international force, said a spokesman.

The spokesman said the attack so far out at sea was a clear sign that the international patrols against pirates were having a “marked effect on pirate activity in the area”.

“Once they start attacking that far out, you're not even really talking about the Somali basin or areas of water that have any connection with Somalia.” said an officer, Roger Middleton. “Once you're that far out, it's just the Indian Ocean, and it means you're looking at trade going from the Gulf to Asia, from Asia to South Africa.”

“This is the farthest robbing to date. They are now operating near the Maldives and India.” said another officer.

The three ships-the MV Prantalay 11,12,and 14-had 77 members on board in total. All of them are Thai, the spokesman said. Before the Sunday robbing, pirates held 11 ships and 228 sailors.

Pirates have increased attacks over the past year in hopes of catching more dollar payments. Because of increased patrols and defenses on board ships, the success rate(率) has gone down, though the number of successful attacks has stayed the same year over year.

1. The pirate attack reported in the text happened________.

A. far out in the Indian Ocean

B. in the normal patrol area

C. near the Somali coast

D. in the south of Africa

2. According to the text, which can best describe the situation of the pirate problems?

A. More goods on board are lost.

B. Pirate attacks happen in a larger area now.

C. The number of attacks has stayed the same these years.

D. Pirate attacks are as serious as before along the Somali coast.

3. Which is TRUE about the warship patrols according to the text?

A. The patrols are of little effect.

B. The patrols are more difficult.

C. More patrols are quite necessary even in Asia.

D. The patrols only drive the pirates to other areas.

4. How many sailors were held by the pirates up to the time of the report?

A. 228.

B. 77.

C. 383.

D. 305.

第一段中有“The people were poor. However, they were not unhappy.”

根據第二段的.“This seemed like money for nothing.”

根據倒數第二段中“They had been doing an important job—eating insects. Now with so many frogs killed, the insects were increasing more rapidly. They were damaging the crops and spreading diseases.”

“The robbing of the three ships Sunday was about 600 miles outside the normal operation area for the international force”以及“Once you're that far out, it's just the Indian Ocean...”

依據...the international patrols against pirates were having a “marked effect on pirate activity in the area”及Once you're that far out, it's just the Indian Ocean, and it means you're looking at trade going from the Gulf to Asia, from Asia to South Africa.

由文章首句“Somali pirates robbed three Thai fishing ships with 77 sailors on board...”及“Before the Sunday robbing, pirates held 11 ships and 228 sailors.”
