His subordinates all advised him not to go, but Meng Chang Jun wouldn't listen to them.
At this time, a man told him such a story.
"Once when I was passing the Zi River, I heard in my dream a man made of mud talking with awooden puppet by the river bank.
The wooden puppet said to the mud man:`You were formerly a lump of earth, now made into aman of mud.
But if it rains and the water in the river rises, you will surely be damaged by the water.'
The man made of mud replied:
`If I were damaged by the water, I would not be afraid, but would only return to my originalstate and dissolve into earth. But you?
You were carved from the peach tree in the garden.
If it rains heavily and the water in the river rises, you will be in no position to decide for yourselfand can only float away with the river current.
Since you cannot decide for yourself, then you will never be able to return to your originalplace."'
After Meng Chang Jun heard this story of the conversation between the mud man and thewooden puppet, he changed his mind and decided not to go to the State of Qin.
One day, Ping Gong, the King of the State of Jin, said to his minister Shi Kuang: "I am over 70years old.
Though I "am eager to read some books, I feel it is too late."
Shi Kuang said: "Too late? Why don't you light the candle?"
Ping Gong said: "I am serious. But you go so far as to make fun of me!"
Shi Kuang said: "How dare I, a blind minister, make fun of Your Majesty?
I heard that when a man in his youth is fond of studying, he is like the rising sun, brilliant andmagnificent;
我聽說,一個人在少年的時候好學,就像初升的太陽那樣,輝煌而燦爛;
when a man in the prime of life is fond of studying, he is like the sun at noon, with still half aday's good time ahead;
壯年的時候好學,猶如正午的太陽,還有半天的好時光呢;
when a man in his old age is fond of studying, he is like the flame of a candle.
Though the light is failing, it is better than groping in the dark."
Hearing Shi Kuang's words, Ping Gong of Jin said with pleasure:
"How well you have put it!"

Some of us always spend Sundays aimlessly. We can seldom derive profits from the valuable hours of Sundays. This is indeed a great pity. Though Sundays are set aside as a day for rest, we must make good use of them.
We know that our school lessons are usually not sufficient. We should often utilize Sundays to read reference books. In this way we will increase our knowledge. Besides, we must be engaged in sports or outing so as to strengthen our bodies.

Today, i went to my old house. i lived in it two years ago. when i am at school, i often think of my old house because it made me happy in the past. my old house is very tidy but old. it has only one level and there are just two rooms in it. i slept with my mother and my father ever evening.
my old house is between two high houses, so it looks very small but lovely. when i lived in my old house, i often played with my sister at the weekends. but now i can’t, so i feel a little sad. two years ago, i could share my feelings with my parents too, but they were separate at last.
so my old house is my favourite place. if i have some trouble, i think of it and my parents, i’ll always get lots of energy. i will then forget the trouble soon. do you think my old house is a wonderful place? yes, it’s my great “palace.”

A greedy dog went into a butcher』s shop and stole a big juicy bone. He ran away so fast that the butcher could not catch him. He ran out into the fields with his bone. He was going to eat it all by himself.
The dog came to a stream. There was a narrow bridge across it. The dog walked on to the bridge, and looked into the water. He could see another dog with a big bone in his mouth.
The greedy dog thought the bone in the water looked much bigger than the one he had stolen from the butcher.
The greedy dog dropped the bone from his mouth. It fell into the water and was lost. He jumped into the water to snatch the bigger bone from the other dog.
The greedy dog jumped into the water with a big splash. He looked everywhere but he could not see the other dog. His shadow had gone.
The silly dog went home hungry. He lost his bone and got nothing because he had been too greedy.

An oak got talking with a reed one day: "you certainly have cause of nature to plain; why even a sparrow's weight for you is quite a strain. At even the slightest breeze that makes theripples play, you quake as if you're touched with blight; you bend and bow sodesolate, indeed you are a sorry sight."
"Now I, like Caucasus in all his pride and state 'Tis little that the rage of Phoebus I abate; Laughing at hurricanes; beneath thunder's roar at ease, I stand as strong and straight, as though I bore a shield of peace inviolate. For you each breath's a storm, for me the storm's a breeze. For you each breath's a storm, for me the storm's a breeze. If only you were growing somewhere close, then in the depths of shade that my broad boughs could lend you form stress of weather I could easily defend you.Alas that nature for your dwelling chose the banks of a Eolus, the stormy realm of air; No doubt, for such as you she found no time to care. 'You are full of charity,' the reed replied with scorn; 'But do not be distressed! My lot can well be borne! If storms I fear, it is not for my sake."
"Though bend I must I shall not break; Tis little harm they do to me. Methinks, for you yourself more danger there may be Tis true that up till now, beneath the fiercest blast Your sturdy from stands firm and fast; from all its angry blows you face you never hide; but wait and see the end!"
And scarce the reed had thus replied when see, all sudden from the North. The boisterousaquilo with hail and rain broke forth. The oak stood firm; the reed down to the earth must bend. On raged the storm still fiercer than before Till, roaring, from his root it tore, The tree that close to heaven his towering summit flaunted and in the realm of shade his sturdy foot had planted.

In the past, a man of the State of Chu intended to go to the State of Zheng to sell pearls.
First he used rare lily magnolia to make a *** all exquisite case which he fumigated with the delicate fragrance of o *** anthuses and Chinese prickly ashes. Furthermore, the case was inlaid with emerald-green jadeite, and adorned with attractive rosy jade. The whole case was decorated in an extremely exquisite way.
A man of the State of Zheng saw this exquisite case and liked it very much. He bought it with a great deal of money, but he returned the pearl in the case to the man of Chu.
Later, people ridiculed the man of Chu by saying that he was good at selling cases, but not good at selling pearls.
To go too far in the pursuit of form just like letting a presumptuous guest usurp the host's role, which brings about opposite results.

Between the States of Jin and Guo was the State of Yu.
Once, the State of Jin intended to invade the State of Guo and had to seek for permission to go by way of the State of Yu. The King of Jin was worried that the State of Yu would refuse to consent.
Xun Xi, a high official of the State of Jin, offered his scheme to the King. He said: "If you offer that piece of round jade and that fine steed as gifts to the King of Yu to ask his permission, he is sure to give his consent."
The King of Jin said: "The round jade from Chuiji is an heirloom from my ancestors. The fine steed from Qudi is a great favorite of mine. If the King of Yu accepted our gifts, yet would not give us permission, what shall we do then?"
Xun Xi replied: "That is not likely. If the King of Yu does not consent to give us permission, he certainly dares not accept our gifts. If he accepts our gifts and gives us permission, that will be like moving the round jade from the storehouse inside to the storehouse outside, and the fine horse from the stable inside to the stable outside. Why should you worry?"
Sure enough, the King of Yu, coveting the round jade and the fine horse, was ready to give permission.
At this moment, his high official Gong Ziqi quickly stepped forward to dissuade him, saying: "You shouldn't give your consent! The State of Guo is our neighbour. Its relation with us is just like that of the lips with the teeth. If the lips are gone, the teeth will be cold. If we give permission to let the State of Jin invade the State of Guo, then when the latter is subjugated, will our state still be safe? That absolutely won't do!"
The King of Yu did not listen to Gong Ziqi's advice and consented to the request of the State of Jin.
Soon, Xun Xi led his forces and conquered the State of Guo. Three years later, the State of Jin conquered the State of Yu, too. Carrying the round jade and leading the fme horse, Xun Xi returned in triumph and gave them back to the King of Jin.
Immensely pleased, the King of Jin *** iled and said: "The round jade remains the same; only the fine steed has aged a bit."

In the past, a man bragged about his bow: "There is no bow better than mine. It doesn't need any arrow!"
Another man bragged about his arrow: "There is no arrow better than mine. It doesn't need any bow!"
At that time, a man good at archery happened to pass by and heard their dialogue. He said: "You are both wrong. One cannot shoot an arrow without a bow; and without an arrow, how can one hit the target?"
Thereupon, the man good at archery asked them to take out their bow and arrow. Then he showed them how to shoot at the target with a bow and an arrow.
Now they understood: A bow won't do without an arrow; nor an arrow without a bow. Theyplement each other.

The hares once gathered together and lamented the unhappiness of their lot, exposed as they were to dangers on all sides and lacking the strength and the courage to hold their own.
Men, dogs, birds and beasts of prey were all their enemies, and killed and devoured them daily: and sooner than enre such persecution any longer, they one and all determined to end their miserable lives. Thus resolved and desperate, they rushed in a body towards a neighbouring pool, intending to drown themselves.
On the bank were sitting a number of frogs, who, when they heard the noise of the hares as they ran, with one accord leaped into the water and hid themselves in the depths.
Then one of the older hares who was wiser than the rest cried out to his companions, "Stop, my friends, take heart; dont let us destroy ourselves after all: see, here are creatures who are afraid of us, and who must, therefore, be still more timid than ourselves."

Flower Power
Ted Nugent was in love. Unfortunately, he wasn』t in love with his wife. He was in love with his girlfriend. He had met Lauren at a car show. She was one of the pretty models who gave sales pitches extolling the wonders of the new cars. To impress her, Ted promised that he would buy a new Mercedes if she would go out with him. She said yes, and one thing led to another.
Ted』s wife, Stephanie, wondered why Ted bought the new car, since he had just bought a new Cadillac two years ago. Because Stephanie liked the Cadillac so much, Ted said, it was now hers. He had bought the Mercedes for himself. Ted started staying late 「at the office.」 He told Stephanie that he had to work extra hours to help pay for the Mercedes. She didn』t mind—she was enjoying her Cadillac.
When Lauren』s birthday rolled around, Ted called up 1-800-Blossom and sent her three dozen roses. To ensure that the transaction would be private, he put it on his business creditcard. Even though Ted had to give his home phone and address, the Blossom representative promised that no paperwork would go to Ted's home.
A week later, Stephanie greeted the mailman at the mailbox. He handed her the mail, including an envelope marked 「Thank You, 1-800-Blossom.」 Stephanie was curious. It wasn』t her birthday, or Valentine』s Day, or their anniversary. Why on earth had Ted ordered flowers? Opening the envelope, she hoped she wasn』t going to ruin a surprise from her hu *** and. The enclosed letter thanked Ted for his order of three dozen roses. The letter even included the note that went with the flowers: 「My darling Lauren: These roses aren』t half as pretty as you are.」 The letter offered a 10-percent discount on Ted』s next order.
When Ted got home late that night, he found an angry note on the door explaining why all the locks had been changed. Four weeks later, Ted sued 1-800-Blossom for ruining his marriage.

Influenza
Influenza, or the flu, attacks up to one billion people annually. In the US, it kills 20,000 annually, most of whom are children or elderly. Occasionally the flu bees pandemic: in 1918, it killed 20 million people worldwide. The flu is a very contagious viral infection spread through the air by coughing, sneezing, or simply talking. It is not caused by getting caught in a rainstorm or by sleeping with the fan or air-conditioning on.
The incubation period is about three days. It doesn』t sneak up on you, like a cold does. All of a sudden, you feel weak, you have a high fever, you have chills, you cough frequently and forcefully, your throat is sore, and your body aches.
For most *** s, the treatment is to simply wait it out: stay home, get lots of bed rest, drink lots of fluids, and take over-the-counter medications such as aspirin, pain-killers, and nasal decongestants. Symptoms usually go away within two weeks. For the elderly and young, the initial viral infection may bee a bacterial infection with deadly consequences, because the victim bees too weak to battle the disease. The death rate for the general population is about one in 1,000. Those most susceptible to severe effects of the flu are people over 65 and people withchronic heart or lung problems, such as asthma.
Flu season in the US is usually December to March. The best prevention, of course, is to stay away from infected people. Since that is almost impossible, the next best preventive strategy is to get an annual flu shot. This vaccine reces the number of people who get infected—and who die—yearly.

Coli Is Everywhere
e all have Escherichia coli bacteria in our intestines. These are the good strains of the bacteria. They help us digest our food. There are billions of these bacteria in our intestines and in our feces. Of the hundreds of strains of good E. coli, there are only a few strains that are bad for us. These strains usually cause stomach problems and diarrhea.
The worst of these strains is labeled E. coli 0157. This strain is mon in healthy cows, sheep, and goats. But when it gets into humans, it causes illness. This strain can kill humans, but only rarely. It kills our red blood cells and causes our kidneys to stop functioning. Hospitalization andtransfusions are necessary to prevent death.
Most people just get mildly sick from E. coli 0157. There are usually just two symptoms: stomachcramps and diarrhea ***non-bloody or bloody***. These symptoms may last up to two weeks. The very young and the very old are most susceptible to severe symptoms. In the US, more than 100,000 people get infected annually. People who live in countries with contaminated water develop immunity to infection.
The primary sources of infection are contaminated water, undercooked hamburger, unwashed fruits and vegetables, and unpasteurized milk or milk procts. Swimming in or swallowing contaminated lake water can also result in infection. In the US, outbreaks involving hundreds of people have been traced to undercooked hamburgers at fast food restaurants, to packaged vegetable procts such as spinach, and even to petting zoos. One of the best preventive measures is to wash our hands often, and wash thoroughly after using the toilet.
