有人希臘人號稱會講幾國語言，英、德、法、意都能說幾句。等到雅典才算初步領教了一般希臘人的水平。頭天住進旅館，第二天一大早便坐車出門在市中心轉轉，據說那是旅遊者比到之處，想來用英語打聽路應該不成問題。誰知到哪裡才發現根本不是那麼回事。
雅典的街道是斜的，且單行線居多。車從東邊來，並不從原路返回。等逛完商店想往回走時，再找反饋的車站可就要命了。問誰誰說不明白。希臘人在表示聽不懂你話的時候表情特別可愛，嘴角向下一撇，兩手一攤，別的也別說了。你要表示感謝，他頭一歪嘴一咧，意思是不用謝。在看了幾十遍類似表演之後，眼看天黑了下來。初來乍到，也不知當地治安的深淺，便把警察作為主要問路人。這警察先生們常常是大手隨便一揮便是方向，於是，我在警察指揮下圍繞著市中心廣場上下左右一同瞎轉。最後找到車站回到旅店才知道，這市中心離旅館不過幾站之遙，就是走回去也用不了半個小時，而我在廣場上足足轉了有兩個多鍾頭。吸取此次教訓，從此上街不問路，寧可靠兩條腿瞎轉悠也不隨便張口。
到圖書館工作一段時候後，慢慢和周圍人熟悉起來，間或也可以選擇有限英文詞彙彼此交流一下。時間一長，能夠口頭的英文詞彙數量銳減。於是，對男人、女人、大人、孩子全用一個詞「beautiful」，對 *** 、慶祝、國慶、齋戒、甚至 *** ，都是」celebration」，對哪年、哪月、哪天、幾點，全是「what time」, 對兒子、女兒、小不點都用 「children」，與人對話都用「Do you speak English?」 或 「English？」開頭。你按正確發音人家聽不懂， 「train」 必須說成 「特律」，「children」 必須是 「吃爾德倫」，「sleep」要帶上手勢，所在學校縮寫為「TEI」 必須讀成 「鐵伊」。按伊利亞教授的說法，在雅典不會說英語的都是阿爾巴尼亞人，希臘人沒有不會說英語的，即使不會英語也會德語或義大利語。但就我所見，那外語恐怕也是味兒事。
兩個月後，我把圖書館的幾個人都逼得能說點英語單詞了，而我也在積極學習希臘語，於是這談話就更熱鬧了。常常是英語說不明白希臘語上，語言不通手勢補充，而且談話內容也越來越豐富，從當地的風土人情，到中國人的日常生活水平，從汽車價格到房產地價，所有兩個國家間的相互比較，都可以相互交流，甚至有次還向麗娜傳授了中國菜的做法。在希臘要想提高英語水平恐怕是不可能了。最讓人擔心的就是回國後滿口希臘味的英語怎麼想學生交待。
任何事情都有兩面性。中國人在希臘說英語，對雙方來說都是外語，誰都帶有本國口音，誰也甭嚇唬誰。不像在 美國的課堂上，聽著同學拿純正的美語簡直就不敢張嘴，好不容易寫篇論文也遲遲不敢交。在這兒您就盡情說吧。即使說完美人聽懂也沒事，換種說法也就是了。於是，英語像一座被扭曲的橋梁，歪歪斜斜地搭在聽說雙方，居然也沒耽誤太多事。
