龍舟競渡，是端午節的一項標志性習俗。相傳起源於紀念屈原投江。
其實，龍舟競渡早在屈原之前就已存在。聞一多先生在《端午考》與《端午的歷史教育》（見《聞一多全集》）論文中考證認為：「古代吳越是崇拜龍的，並認為他們是「龍子」。端午節兩個最主要的活動吃粽子和競渡，都與龍相關。
粽子投入江河水裡祭祀龍神，而競渡則用的是龍舟。他們不僅有「斷發文身」以「像龍子」的習俗，而且每年在端午這天，舉行一次盛大的圖騰祭；其中有一項活動便是在急鼓聲中以刻畫成龍形的獨木舟，在水面上作競渡祭龍神，也給自己游戲取樂，這便是龍舟競渡習俗的由來。
