第一章
保爾因為把煙灰撒在了神甫家做的蛋糕上而離開學校。保爾跟著母親來到食堂幹活，在這里，他被老闆打發到洗涮車間，負責一些粗活臟活。
在食堂幹活的日子裡，保爾受盡壓迫，也看到了生活在社會底層的人們的艱辛痛苦、貧窮，並且十分憎惡那些花天酒地的有錢人。不久，哥哥阿爾焦姆為他在發電廠找了一份工作。
第二章
沙皇被推翻了。但鎮上的人的生活沒有發生什麼大的改變，只是這里出現了布爾什維克。
鎮上一些富人逃跑了。紅軍戰士出現了，鎮上的市民得到了紅軍發的槍支。很快，紅軍撤退，德國人要求市民繳納槍支。
保爾和朱赫來成為了好朋友，朱赫來教會了保爾打拳，還時常給保爾講一些革命道理。保爾把偷的槍藏在院子里，德軍搜查時沒有發現。
第三章
保爾在湖邊釣魚時，結識了林務官的女兒冬妮婭。

劇院舉行了盛大的晚會，很多人都出席了。保爾被押去發電。帕夫柳克趁舞會熱鬧時闖進來，又和戈盧勃打架。場內十分混亂。
城裡有「燒殺擄掠猶太人」的傳聞，引起很多人的恐慌，謝廖沙等人商量著藏身的地方和方法。戈盧勃和帕夫柳克雙方發生沖突後第三天，虐殺猶太人的暴行持續了三天兩夜，有很多人被殺戮和摧殘。但只有幾個人抵抗。
第五章
一天晚上，朱赫來為了躲避搜捕，藏到了保爾家。在保爾家裡，朱赫來給保爾講述了很多革命道理。朱赫來總是傍晚時出去，深夜再回來。一天晚上，朱赫來出去後就沒有回來。保爾在街上打聽朱赫來的下落，當他看到朱赫來被一個士兵押解著時，把押送兵撲倒，救了朱赫來。當晚，保爾被維克托告發，之後被抓到城防司令部。
第六章
冬妮婭得知保爾被抓走，很著急，四處找他。
彼得留拉匪幫的頭目要來鎮上檢閱部隊，上校不願讓頭目看到監獄里關押太多的犯人，便將保爾等人放了出來。保爾離開了監獄，但他沒有地方可去，不知不覺來到冬妮婭家的花園里。狗叫聲驚動了冬妮婭，當她認出是保爾時，她很激動，把保爾留在了家裡。保爾在冬妮婭家得到了休息，但又不願意連累冬妮婭，就執意要離開冬妮婭的家。
第七章
蘇維埃政權建立了，共青團建立起來了，謝廖沙加入紅軍，成為了一個布爾什維克。他是共青團員、團區委書記。他還組織自己的夥伴和姐姐參加共青團。但在會議上，卻只有一個人參加組織，謝廖沙有些泄氣。
保爾的腿被打傷了，他住院時來了信，謝廖沙和麗達去湖邊時遇見了冬妮婭，並把信給她看。謝廖沙和麗達在一起聊天還練習了槍法。
第八章
保爾加入了騎兵部隊。他和幾千名戰士一起英勇戰斗著。在日托米爾，騎兵們從監獄中解救了七千多名革命者。薩穆伊爾講述了舍佩托夫卡發生的悲慘事件。
布瓊尼的騎兵向波軍發起猛烈的沖鋒，給敵人一個又一個沉重的打擊。
一天，保爾到車站時，還遇上了阿爾焦姆。後來保爾又投入戰斗，但自己也受傷了。
第九章
保爾恢復知覺後右眼失明了，所以不能再上前線。保爾出院後和冬妮婭住到了布郎斯其的家裡。冬妮亞參加城裡共青團的會議，在會上，保爾因為冬妮婭的打扮和輕蔑挑釁的眼光和她爭吵起來，兩個人最終分手了。
保爾參加了肅反工作。這個工作影響了保爾的健康，於是他到鐵路工廠去擔任共青團書記。
第十章
省委派麗達做代表去出席一個縣的團代表大會，並讓保爾協助她工作。
朱赫來領導三百名同志平息了暴亂。索洛緬卡大隊損失了五個人，肅反委員會犧牲了一個人。同一天夜裡，在舍佩托夫卡逮捕了瓦西里神甫、他的兩個女兒以及他們的全部同夥，一場風暴平息了。
但鐵路運輸馬上就要癱瘓了。現在，一切都取決於糧食和木柴。
第十一章
保爾和共青團員被調去修鐵路。
築路隊的工作條件非常艱苦，武裝土匪的騷擾和疾病、飢餓也都威脅著保爾和同志們。保爾忘我地工作。寒冬，人們仍然在冰天雪地里奮力勞動。一次在車站，保爾還遇見了冬妮婭。
鐵路終於如期修通了，朱赫來為他們的革命熱情深深感動，說「鋼鐵就是這樣煉成的」。他還送給保爾一把槍。但不久後，保爾病倒了。
第十二章
保爾在家養好傷，然後去另一個城市找自己的戰友。但很多人都走了，最後他只找到潘克拉托夫。他和家人們看到保爾都恨驚奇。他還給保爾講四個月來發生的各種事情。
第二天，保爾到團省委恢復了團籍，並在大會上發言。之後保爾又回到電廠上班。他還和茨韋塔耶夫因為菲金弄壞電鑽的事爭吵起來。但最後兩人達成了一致。
第十三章
保爾宣布自己以後不抽煙，不罵人。後來他病倒了，離開工廠，回到了家，病好後擔任地方武裝的政治工作，並平息了一場爭斗。
保爾，麗達和團區委的幹部鼓勵很多年輕人入了團。
保爾從莉達交給他的公函上知道自己成為了共產黨正式黨員，並可擔任重要的共青團工作。
第十四章
保爾在工作中堅決和各種歪風邪氣作斗爭，對戰友杜巴瓦的成為反對派，他十分痛心，在會上堅決地給予批評，有一些人醒悟了。不過杜巴瓦還是走了。
列寧去世了，他的逝世促使幾十萬工人加入了布爾什維克黨。很多產業工人在大會上講話，要加入共產黨。阿爾焦姆也是其中一個，他講了自己的經歷，全票通過入了黨。
第十五章
在全俄代表大會上，麗達遇見了保爾，兩人看見對方都十分高興。保爾給安娜講了自己見勸杜巴瓦回團時發生的事，還解釋了幾年前中斷和麗達的友誼是因為自己按「牛虻」中主人公的方式處理事情
因為聽見了女團員的訴說和法伊洛所說的自己的行為，保爾很生氣，打了法伊洛。兩人在法庭上爭斗，後來法伊洛被開除黨籍。
保爾的身體情況越來越差了，他被批准到海邊療養。
第十六章
在海濱療養時，保爾在這里遇見了扎爾基。他們一起在保爾的房間里開了一個集會。
保爾出了車禍。於是保爾又住進了醫院。出院後，按母親的來信，保爾去了阿莉比娜•丘察姆家。在那裡，他認識了達雅和廖莉婭。答應兩姐妹幫他們逃出牢籠。
保爾來到中央委員會，但已不能恢復工作。保爾去了南方。
第十七章
保爾第二次到丘察姆家。保爾知道自己的病更重了，想自殺，但又忍住了。保爾回到住處，和達雅結婚了。
保爾給哥哥阿爾焦姆寫信訴說了自己的情況。生活還是和從前一樣。達雅做工，保爾學習。不久後，保爾雙腿癱瘓了。現在只有右手還能活動。他要和達雅離婚。但達雅不同意。母親知道保爾又遭到了新的不幸，過來照顧他。
達雅當選為市蘇維埃委員了。但保爾的病情在繼續發展。他失明了。
第十八章
保爾又住進了醫院，做過一次手術後，他在莫斯科定居，開始寫小說《暴風雨的兒女》。朋友們看了稿都說他寫的很好。
保爾的書寫完後，母親把包裹送到了郵局，漫長的等待過後，州委打來的電報，上面寫著： 小說備受贊賞，即將出版，祝賀成功。
