審題立意後，學生應用最精煉的語言概括出段落的主題句。何為主題句?柯群勝在其文章中談到，"主題句是段落的中心，有提攜全段的作用。"因此，主題句最好放在每段的段首，這個位置醒目突出，能讓閱卷人一眼就能明了全段大意。
同時，主題句結構要完整，表達意義要准確，有高度的概括性，且用詞要精煉生動。
3、選擇材料擴展主題句
寫作材料與主題句密切相關。主題句從無數素材中總結濃縮而來，同時，它又提攜著材料，材料又必須為主題句服務，詳細說明並支持主題句的思想，與文章主題形成有機的統一體，任何與主題句無關的繁雜內容都應舍棄。選擇的材料最好來自日常生活，真實且具有說服力。
