㈠ 用英語表達表示可能的單詞幾區別

英語中有許多此表示「可能」，但歸納起來，無非就三類：
1.情態動詞may和can.
2.形容詞likely,possible,probable.
3.副詞 maybe,perhaps,possibly,probably.

一．情態動詞may (might)和can (could)
1． can在肯定句中，表示客觀的(理論的)可能性，並不涉及具體某事是否會發生，常可以說明人或事物的特徵。要表達具體某事實際，發生的可能性時，不可用can,須用could,may,might 。
如：
(1)A left-luggage office is a place where bags can be left for a short time ,especially at a railway station.[2003全國,28]
行李寄存處，尤其是在火車站，使人們可以短期存放行李的地方。(客觀可能性)
(2)Accidents can happen on such rainy days.
這種下雨的天氣可能會發生事故.(客觀可能性)
(3)Peter may come with us tonight ,but he isn』t sure yet.[1993全國,27]
彼得今晚可能來我們這兒，但還沒確定.(實際可能性)
(4)We may go camping next Sunday.
下星期我們可能去野營.(實際可能性)
2． may not 表示「可能不」，can not/can』t表示「不可能」，can(could)可用於疑問意義。
如：
(1)---- Is John coming by train ?
---- He should ,but he may not .He likes driving his car.[2002全國，25](表示「可能不」)
(2)A computer can』t think for itself ;it must be told what to do .[1991全國,15](表示「不可能」)
(3)Mr Bush is on time for everything .How can it be that he was late for the opening ceremony ?[2001上海,27]
試比較：
This can』t be done by him .這不可能是他乾的。
This may not be done by him .這可能不是他乾的。
Can this be done by him ?這可能是他乾的嗎?(此處不可用may，may用於疑問句表示「可以」。但此句可以說：Is this likely to be done by him ?)
另外，could ,might並不一定與過去的時間有關，而表示可能性弱於它們相應的現在時形式。
如：
This could/may/might be done by him .這件事有可能是他乾的。（語氣依次遞減）
二、形容詞：likely , possible , probable
1．likely是常用詞，只「從表面及想來看很有可能」，常用句型: sb./sth be likely to do
It is likely that...
如：
They are likely to become angry with him .
他們可能會對他發怒。
It is likely that he will come.
注意:（1）、 likely表示「有可能成功的」、「有希望的」意思時，不能用另外兩詞。
e.g What is the likeliest time to find him at home?
什麼時候最可能在家裡找到他？
（2）、likely在作副詞時，前面一定要加very或most.
e.g They』ll very likely ask for an increase in the budget.
他們很可能要求增加預算。

2．possible指「由於有適當的條件和方法，某事可能發生或做到」，強調「客觀上有可能」，但常含有「實際希望很小」的意思。
如：
I will do everything possible to help you .
我將盡一切可能幫助你.
常用句型: It is possible for sb. to do something
It is possible that…
e.g It is possible for one man to finish this.
It』s possible that he will accept the terms.
注意:possible不能以人作主語，也不能說make sb. possible,應說make it possible for sb. to do sth.
e.g This made it possible for him to go abroad for further studies.
3 . probable 語氣比possible強，指有根據、合情理、值得相信的事物，帶有大概、很可能 的意思。
如：
The home team , far ahead , is the probeble winner.
主隊份遙遙領先，很可能成為勝利者。
注意: probable也不能以人作主語,也不能用於It is probable for sb. to do sth.句型, 但可用於句型：It is probable that…
e.g It is probable that the winner will get a prize.
另外，這三個形容詞likely , possible , probable 都可用於句型：It is +adj.+to do sth./that-clause. It作形式主語。但只有likely可以用於句型：sb./sth be likely to do sth .
如：
(1) It is probable that it will rain today.
今天很可能會下雨。
(第一個it是形式主語，第二個是天氣。)
(2) She is the mostgirl to win the prize.
A.possible B.probable C.likely D.perhaps
因為主語是人，所以答案應是C.表示「有希望的」。
試比較：
( ╳) It is probable to rain today.(It指天氣)
( √ ) It is likely to rain today.(It指天氣)
但可以說：He is impossble to teach.
(=It is impossible to teach him.)
注意：不定式動詞與主語存在著邏輯上的動賓關系時，句子才正確。
三、副詞：maybe , perhaps , possibly , probably
這四個詞都有「可能、或許」的意思，但用法略有不同：maybe和perhaps基本相同，常用於句手，maybe多用於口語。
如：
Maybe/Perhaps the weather will get better.
天氣可能會變得好一些。
probable是「很可能」的意思，可能性比其它三個大。probably常與will連用，而possibly常與can,could或may連用，may與possibly連用表示的可能性更小，can/could與possibly連用以加強語氣。
另外，quite possibly表示「很有可能」，very/most probably意為「極有可能」。如：
(1) She most/very probably thinks she is right when she says things like that.(極有可能)
(2) Eric』s father is a skilled worker and has repaired a lot of this kind ,so he will succeed in repairing this bike.
A.probably B.maybe C.may be D.perhaps
(A可以和will連用，因此用probably.)
(3)No sooner had she seen the frightening snake than the little girl started to run as fast as shecould .
A. perhaps B.maybe C.possibly D.probably
(和could連用 ，因此用possibly 選擇 C )
