a
topic
of...has
been
brought
into
people's
heated
discussion.」 (in
my
opinion,.../i
think,.../etc.)
(first,.../on
one
hand,.../first
of
all,.../etc.)(second,.../on
the
other
hand,.../then,.../etc.)(finally,.../at
last,.../what's
more,.../moreover,.../etc.)
(in
conclusion,.../generally
speaking.../in
short,.../etc.)

Origin
Qingming Festival, also known as Pure Brightness Festival or Tomb-sweeping Day, is one of the 24 segments of the Chinese calendar. It normally falls on the 4th or 5th of April, between spring plowing and summer weeding, and is a time to pay respects to one's ancestors and to tidy their gravesite. On this day, whole families, young and old, go to the gravesite of deceased family members to burn incense and perform a ritual offering while clearing away plant overgrowth from the gravesite.
Qingming Festival is when Chinese people visit the graves or burial grounds of their ancestors. Traditionally, people brought a whole rooster with them to the graves visited but the occasion has become less formal over time. The festival originated from Hanshi Day (寒食節, literally, Day with cold food only), a memorial day for Jie Zitui (介子推, or Jie Zhitui). Jie Zitui died in 636 BC in the Spring and Autumn Period. He was one of many followers of Duke Wen of Jin before he became a ke. Once, ring Wen's 19 years of exile, they had no food and Jie prepared some meat soup for Wen. Wen enjoyed it a lot and wondered where Jie had obtained the soup. It turned out Jie had cut a piece of meat from his own thigh to make the soup. Wen was so moved he promised to reward him one day. However, Jie was not the type of person who sought rewards. Instead, he just wanted to help Wen to return to Jin to become king. Once Wen became ke, Jie resigned and stayed away from him. Duke Wen rewarded the people who helped him in the decades, but for some reason he forgot to reward Jie, who by then had moved into the forest with his mother. Duke Wen went to the forest, but could not find Jie. Heeding suggestions from his officials, Duke Wen ordered men to set the forest on fire to force out Jie. However, Jie died in the fire. Feeling remorseful, Duke Wen ordered three days without fire to honour Jie's memory. The county where Jie died is still called Jiexiu (介休, literally "the place Jie rests forever").
Customs
Qingming Festival is a time of many different activities, among which the main ones are tomb sweeping, taking a spring outing, flying kites. Some other lost customs like wearing willow branches on the head and riding on swings have added infinite joy in past days. The festival is a combination of sadness and happiness, perhaps bittersweet.
Spring Outing
Not only is it a day for commemorating the dead, is it also a festival for people to enjoy themselves. During March, everything in nature takes on a new look, as trees turn green, flowers blossom, and the sun shines brightly. It is a fine time to go out and to appreciate the beautiful scenes of nature ring the festival. This custom can be traced back to the Tang Dynasty and followed by each dynasty later till today. So visitors can be seen everywhere ring the month of the festival.
Spring outings not only add joy to life but also promote a healthy body and mind.
Tomb Sweeping or Ancestor Worshipping
The major custom in Qingming Festival is tomb sweeping. According to folk religion, the spirits of deceased ancestors still live underground and look after the family; the tombs are said to be their houses; thus it is very important to keep the tombs clean.
The Qingming Festival is spent honoring the dead, which is one of many ways good Confucians demonstrate filial piety. On this day, people visit their family graves to remove any underbrush that has grown. They would uproot weeds near the gravesites, wipe the tombstones and decorate the tombstones with fresh flowers. And then they will set out offerings of food and paper money.
Flying Kites
Flying kites is an activity favored by many people ring the Qingming Festival. Kites are not only flown at day time but also in the evening. Little lanterns are tied to the kite or to the string that holds the kite. And when the kite is flying in the sky, the lanterns look like twinkling stars that add unique scenery to the sky ring the night. What makes flying kites ring this festival special is that people cut the string while the kite is in the sky to let it fly free. It is said this brings good luck and that diseases can be eliminated by doing this.
Planting Willow Trees 插柳
Because Jie Zitui died embracing a willow tree, the willow is believed to have miraculous powers against evil. During the Qingming Festival, willow branches are hung on door fronts and used to sweep the tombs.
Swinging
The common swing has offered sport to many children throughout the world. During the Ming Dynasty, swinging was a designated recreation on the Qingming Festival, also known as the Clear and Bright Festival or the Tomb Sweeping Festival. Because the festival generally occurs in mid-spring, many also use the occasion for family outings.
According to the Annals of the Ming Court, this day was also called Swing Festival, when swings were suspended in the Hall of Earthly Peace of the Forbidden City and in all the residential complexes where palace ladies resided. Ladies of the imperial household wore colorful silks especially made for the occasion, and amused themselves on swings.
A Time to Taste Tea 品茶
Qingming Festival is also a time to enjoy a cup of tea, because the tea proced around Qingming Festival is said to be with high-quality.
The plucking of tea usually takes place in spring, summer and autumn. Tealeaves from different seasons have different appearances and inner quality. Tealeaves plucked in spring, from early March to the Qingming Festival, are called “pre-ming tea” or “first tea.” Its color is of light jade green, and tastes pure with a touch of acerbity. Two weeks after Qingming, it is the Guyu solar term on the Chinese lunar calendar. During this time, the Jiangnan area will experience a round of fine precipitation for the moistening of crops. And this brings forth the second peak season of tea picking. Tealeaves collected after the Qingming but before Guyu are called “pre-rain tea,” and the spring tea picked after that are called “post-rain tea.” Spring tea’s prices usually vary according to the time the tealeaves were picked, with the prices being higher for earlier tea and lower for the later. In most cases, early-spring green tea is the best in quality among all available tea.

The origin of the Qingming Festival dates back to the story of Jie Zitui, a loyal subject of Duke Wen of Jin. Jie Zitui selflessly offered his own thigh meat to save his lord ring a time of famine. Despite his sacrifice, Duke Wen failed to reward Jie Zitui until it was too late. Jie Zitui retreated into the forest, and Duke Wen, attempting to force him out, ordered the forest to be set on fire. Jie Zitui died in the fire, and Duke Wen, filled with remorse, decreed three days of cold food consumption to mourn Jie Zitui, which later became the Hanshi (Cold Food) Festival. The place where Jie Zitui died is now called Jiexiu (介休), meaning "the place where Jie Zitui rests forever."
The Qingming Festival is rich with customs and activities. Tomb-sweeping is the primary tradition, reflecting the importance of maintaining the graves of ancestors. It is also a time for enjoying the spring season. Spring outings are popular, as the weather is ideal for appreciating the renewed natural world. Kite flying is another significant activity, with kites of various designs soaring ring the day and lanterns attached to them lighting up the evening sky.
Folklore suggests that cutting the kite string while the kite is airborne will bring good luck and health. Willow branches are also a part of the festival, as it is believed that Jie Zitui died embracing a willow, endowing the plant with protective properties against evil. Swinging on swings, another custom, was particularly popular ring the Ming Dynasty and was even practiced within the Forbidden City.
The Qingming Festival is also an occasion for tea appreciation, as the tea harvested around this time is considered to be of high quality. Finally, the festival has been immortalized in poetry, with many poets writing about the emotions and beauty of Tomb-sweeping Day.

「His courage in battle might without exaggeration be called lion-like.」
He was very brave in battle.」
「He was hard up for money and was being pressed by his creditor.」
可以概括為:「He was in financial difficulties.」
「Beautiful mountains like Mount Tai, Lushan Mountain, and Mount Huang, were visited by only a few people in the past. Today, better wages, holidays with pay, new hotels on these mountains, and better train and bus services, have brought them within reach of many who never thought of visiting them ten years ago.」
Beautiful mountains like Mount Tai, once visited by only a few people, are today accessible to many, thanks to better wages, paid holidays, new hotels and better transportation services.」
「She brought home several Chinese and English novels, a few copies of Time and Newsweek and some textbooks. She intended to read all of them ring the winter vocation.」
She brought home a lot of books to read ring the vocation.」
比如,可以使用but, then, thus, yet, though,不能使用at the same time, in the first place, because of these, on the other hand等較長的連接詞.
Kate looked at Paul disapprovingly: You use much too much salt on your food, Paul — it』s not good for you!」 Paul put down his knife and frowned:」Why on earth not! If you didn』t have salt on your food it would taste awful… like eating cardboard or sand… just imagine bread without salt in it, or potatoes or pasta cooked without salt!」 Kate was patient. She didn』t want to quarrel with Paul. She wanted to persuade him. She said firmly:」But too much salt is bad for you. It cause high blood pressure and latter on, heart-attacks. It also disguises the taste of food, the real tastes which are much more subtle than salt, and which we have lost the sensitivity to appreciate any more.」
Kate suggested to Paul that he should eat less salt. She thought that eating too much salt would do hard to Paul』s health and that it could rece the real tastes of food. But Paul disagreed. He said that food without salt would be tasteless.
