浙江杭州市人，1911年12月11日生於上海。
1934年在美國麻省理工學院和加利福尼亞理工學院學習。

一、生平簡介錢學森（1911~X）中國科學家，火箭專家，1911年12月1日生於上海，3歲時隨父來到北京，1934年畢業於上海交通大學機械工程系，1935年赴美國研究航空工程和空氣動力學，1938年獲加利福尼亞理工學院博士學位。
後留在美國任講師、副教授、教授以及超音速實驗室主任和古根罕噴氣推進研究中心主任。
1950年開始爭取回歸祖國，受到美國政府迫害，失去自由，歷經5年於1955年才回到祖國，1958年起長期擔任火箭導彈和航天器研製的技術領導職務。
1959年，加入中國共產黨。

二、科學成就錢學森長期擔任中國火箭和航天計劃的技術領導人，對航天技術、系統科學和系統工程做出了巨大的和開拓性的貢獻。
錢學森共發表專著7部，論文300餘篇。
主要貢獻表現在以下幾方面：①應用力學錢學森在應用力學的空氣動力學方面和固體力學方面都做過開拓性的工作。
與馮·卡門合作進行的可壓縮邊界層的研究，揭示了這一領域的一些溫度變化情況，創立了卡門——錢學森方法。
與郭永懷合作最早在跨聲速流動問題中引入上下臨界馬赫數的概念。
②噴氣推進與航天技術從40年代到60年代初期，錢學森在火箭與航天領域提出了若乾重要的概念：在40年代提出並實現了火箭助推起飛裝置（JATO），使飛機跑道距離縮短；在1949年提出了火箭旅客飛機概念和關於核火箭的設想；在1953年研究了行星際飛行理論的可能性；在1962年出版的《星際航行概論》中，提出了用一架裝有噴氣發動機的大飛機作為第一級運載工具，用一架裝有火箭發動機的飛機作為第二級運載工具的天地往返運輸系統概念。
③工程式控制制論工程式控制制論在其形成過程中，把設計穩定與制導系統這類工程技術實踐作為主要研究對象。
錢學森本人就是這類研究工作的先驅者。
④物理力學錢學森在1946年將稀薄氣體的物理、化學和力學特性結合起來的研究，是先驅性的工作。
1953年，他正式提出物理力學概念，主張從物質的微觀規律確定其宏觀力學特性，改變過去只靠實驗測定力學性質的方法，大大節約了人力物力，並開拓了高溫高壓的新領域。
1961年他編著的《物理力學講義》正式出版。
現在這門科學的帶頭人是苟清泉教授，1984年錢學森向苟清泉建議，把物理力學擴展到原子分子設計的工程技術上。
⑤系統工程錢學森不僅將我國航天系統工程的實踐提煉成航天系統工程理論，並且在80年代初期提出國民經濟建設總體設計部的概念，還堅持致力於將航天系統工程概念推廣應用到整個國家和國民經濟建設，並從社會形態和開放復雜巨系統的高度，論述了社會系統。
任何一個社會的社會形態都有三個側面：經濟的社會形態，政治的社會形態和意識的社會形態。
錢學森從而提出把社會系統劃分為社會經濟系統、社會政治系統和社會意識系統三個組成部分。
相應於三種社會形態應有三種文明建設，即物質文明建設（經濟形態）、政治文明建設（政治形態）和精神文明建設（意識形態）。
社會主義文明建設應是這三種文明建設的協調發展。
從實踐角度來看，保證這三種文明建設協調發展的就是社會系統工程。
從改革和開放的現實來看，不僅需要經濟系統工程，更需要社會系統工程。
⑥系統科學錢學森對系統科學最重要的貢獻，是他發展了系統學和開放的復雜巨系統的方法論。
⑦思維科學人工智慧已成為國際上的一大熱門，但學術思想卻處於混亂狀態。
在這樣的背景下，錢學森站在科技發展的前沿，提出創建思維科學（noeticscience）這一科學技術部門，把30年代中國哲學界曾議論過，有所爭論，但在當時條件下沒法講清楚的主張，科學地概括成為思維科學。
比較突出的貢獻為：（1）錢學森在80年代初提出創建思維科學技術部門，認為思維科學是處理意識與大腦、精神與物質、主觀與客觀的科學，是現代科學技術的一個大部門。
