animals have no place in the 21st century. Some people think that preventing these wild animals from dying out is a waste of resource. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion.
Biological diversity has never been so threatened as it is today as a result of the process of human civilization. The various forms of pressure created by human activity have destroyed natural balance, led to the deterioration of natural habitats, genetic erosion and the rarity, even disappearance, of a number of plant and animal species.
As the pace of civilization accelerates, more people, taking more space, needing to use more natural resources, engaging in ever-growing consumption, impose severe deterioration on the habitat of animals. An increasing number of people come to realize that the disappearance of animals will result in serious threat to the equilibrium of ecosystem. Simply put, the extinction of hawks, a rat-eating bird seen in many regions, will result in the rapid propagation of rats. And rats, further, will destroy the prairies and threaten the other animals like gazelles, zebras and others, who live on grass and green lands. The coexistence of animals and human beings creates perfect harmony and brings about the vividness to our planet.
It is hard to imagine what our world would be like without animals. Sociologists also point out that the disappearance of animals can cause social and economic problems. Animal trade, as a supporting sector to the world economy, was very active before. However, the situation is beyond control since animal trade is very profitable and alluring. Many species cannot escape the adversity of being killed.
Certainly, our diet cannot be without meat. There are living stocks, which can provide us with sufficient and nutritious proce. Therefore, we need not to resort to wild animals, especially the endangered ones. To protect animals is to protect our living environment. Every indivial should join efforts to keep the diversity of animals.

Biodiversity is the variety and variability of life on Earth. This includes all of the plants and animals that live and grow on the Earth, all of the habitats that they call home, and all of the natural processes of which they are a part. The earth supports an incredible array of biodiversity— Thailand』s tiny bumblebee bat to the ocean』s great blue whale—with plants and animals of all shapes and sizes in between. This fantastic variety of life is found in diverse habitats ranging from the hottest desert to tropical rainforests to the arctic tundra. Biodiversity is essential to every aspect of the way that humans live around the world. Plants and animals provide people with food and medicine, trees play an important role in absorbing greenhouse gases and cleaning the air we breathe, and rivers and watersheds provide the clean water that we drink.
Unfortunately, the earth』s biodiversity is disappearing, with an estimated 1,000 species per year becoming extinct. Conserving biodiversity is especially crucial in developing countries where people』s livelihoods are directly dependent on natural resources such as forests, fisheries and wildlife.
Plants and animals provide people with food and medicine. Forty percent of all prescriptions written today are composed from the natural compounds found in different species. An estimated 80,000 edible plants are found in the world, and one in every three mouthfuls of the food you swallow is prepared from plants pollinated by wild insects and animals. The extinction of each additional species results in the irreversible loss of unique genetic materials, each of which has potential for development of medicines and foods and associated enterprises that create jobs.
While plants and animals keep you well fed and healthy, trees play an important role in absorbing greenhouse gases. Through photosynthesis, trees absorb and store atmospheric carbon, helping to combat global warming and purifying the air we breathe. Forests also control soil erosion and purify water.
As natural systems breakdown, people around the world are forced to find alternative and often more costly ways to maintain adequate supplies of clean water or to deal with increasingly polluted air. The net economic benefits of biodiversity are estimated to be at least $3 trillion per year, or 11 percent of the annual world economic output.

這是我的一個presentation的講稿 for community ecology 不知道適不適合你,是以一個文章為背景的 the bees are back in town (The Economist on March 7th 2009)
At the end of February, the almond flowers were competing for the pollinators in the orchards of California』s central valley. The flowers are so delicate to attract the pollinators which are mainly honeybees, because of the shortage of honeybees in California. The shortage of the honeybees called colony collapse disorder. The colony collapse disorder is described as a phenomenon that large numbers of honeybees are dead in the winter. The causes of colony collapse disorder are unclear. There are some possible causes of the colony collapse disorder, such as virus, parasites and fungus. A study from Cox-foster et. al. showing that the Israeli acute paralysis virus is closely corresponding to the colony collapse disorder by molecular analysis of pathogen DNA like 16s DNA which are highly conserved. For instance, DNA sequencing and NCBI blast were used to identify the species of pathogen on the honeybees. Beside the Israeli acute paralysis virus, parasitic mites can also lead to the colony collapse disorder. But further study is showing that the origin of the colony collapse disorder is the poor food nutrients.
